  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's the No.1 missing piece in the RED post software puzzle?

Improvements..in a word?

SPEED

This stuff takes MUCH too long, in my opinion. We leave stuff overnight unattended, but this is not ideal workflow. Nearly every time we've had files that stopped for some reason and had to be done while we started editing the next day.

Tapeless is great...but not when tapeless takes 3-5 times longer than actually just loading the tape. :-) I know...film transfer session, blah, blah. But we've had export times in RED Rushes that we honestly could have gone and done a transfer session and been back before it finished.

So...whatever can be done to speed up those exports...Apple? RED? Adobe?

1. WINDOWS
2. SPEED
3. EDL to XML convertor (both ways)
4. Choice of outputting sensible naming structure eg. starting from the top 'SHOT 001' to end 'SHOT999' for working on VFX shots
5. Selecting the resizing shots on output while exporting at a set format eg. all out at 2k but some exporting out at 4k with different % zooms all on the same export session....

Whats the best shot naming convention?

A001_scene_054C_take_001_.001200.dpx

can be also

A001_scene_054_shot_003_take_001.001200.dpx

A small application that copies only the R3D files in an XML or EDL from A to B. Otherwise you have to take everything to the facility for a R3D conform. As more and more software can deal with R3Ds this will be important.

kind regards

Michael

This one we have built already, will be available in the next release :)

EDL -> Redcine XML in Windows would be cool.

Proposed workflow
1. First grade/render in Redcine for offline
2. EDL from offline to Redcine XML

The new tool should be able create new project from Redcine project so that the grading decitions made for offline will be preserved.

Also it should allow user to map reels and media location.
So we can used 8 character reel names as it is common.

The full 16 character source will provide a more accurate conform compared to an 8 and certainly more than a 4. Passing color information from the dailies creation to the conform prep stage is dependent on getting the values passed along in the first place.

I think there needs to be some handling of the audio from the camera - make sure tracks are unique, remove any pan settings, export as BWF, etc.

While having a filename contain more metadata I am hesitant as an editor to have the AC be responsible for that as things move so fast on the set that most of the shots will not be logged as such. Full logging can be done for scene/take in BWF and I rarely see that being done other than a sequential count of the file recordings.

Certainly a re-indexing of the R3D files which Monkey already does is key to getting a proper REDCINE XML created since moving the files can break that link.

We have developed a software that converts Avid XML to Redcine XML.
It can be multitrack and full of effects. Relinks like magic with everything preserved thanks to Avid's Relink by: Source Timecode and Tape

A public beta for Mac is available this week. Windows will be another week before beta. Full release in the beginning of November.

25 frames per second XML from Final Cut Pro read as a 25fps XML in Redcine, not 24.

Hi Michael, the copy tool is now available in Monkey Extract 2.0, thanks for your feedback :)

Sorry me, no software at all.
- AJA or BM Card with Redcode Ks to good quality 1080p output.
(There´s lots of ways to edit with proxies but no one with good SDI monitoring)
- until the first one... Prores for windows for low cost renders.
- Best-Than-Redrushes software for transcode-rescale.
- 2K televison for everybody will make my life easier

Hi, curious - is there a tool that could re-cut .r3d's with in-out points to save even more space, or is this technically infeasible?

Nigel,

A tool that can do all the great things that your application can do combined with the visual reference features (in terms of cropping) of Hans' Clipfinder. Additions that would be nice are also a visual reference of burn ins, the ability to save render settings, and full featured raw adjustments from Red Alert.

So in short, if you or anyone could mash up Clipfinder, Monkey Extract and RedAlert! I'd be in heaven. I want to be able to go from Application X to FCP to Application X and back to FCP. without having to open RedAlert or RedCine to piecemeal features and visual references.

If I could code I'd be right there helping you!

Cheers,
