  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's the future of Red post?

We've heard all about Red's 8 new cameras. How about some post support from Red. I haven't heard one thing about the future of Red post except that adobe has a plugin coming. There is no word on red's software which is not up to par and it seems I have to shell out even more money if I want to have a reasonable post workflow option. I'm not sure why I'm posting this again because Red never responds. It's like they've decided to give up all together on the post end and I find this very unsettling.

Frankly Red offers more post support currently than any other camera maker ever. If you can't figure out a workable post routine with the tools available maybe you should consider a different line of work. Redcine Redalert Redrushes Redline Scratch any Qt application and soon Adobe.

There's lots happening on the software front. Most of it involves other vendors directly and through the SDK and generally get announced when the vendors are ready. In addition to continuing updates to REDcine, REDAlert, REDline, REDrushes, QT codec, L&T plugin (new versions of RA,RL,RR, were released on the 13th also), there will soon be the Adobe plugin, new Apple Color workflow, Windows REDline, Linux REDline, Linux SDK, plus a number of other solutions from third parties that are under progress.

The SDK is also opening up support in many other applications and new applications.

If that's unsettling then can you show me any other camera company that has shown more software support for their products?

Mike, I don't think you're being fair here. We've worked with nearly every one of those apps and every one has it's own problems. There is a GREAT DEAL that can be done still on the apps and hopefully RED is working on them.

I won't bother listing them, but we have hit more problems with all 3 apps:
-No audio for mac in Cine
-Cine will only do one clip correctly at a time
-Cine won't work with cutlists/Crimson on long clips
-Alert obviously only does one clip at a time, still limited
-Rushes crashes regularly (haven't tested brand new version yet)
-All are very slow & somewhat unreliable even with latest and greatest mac
-Not RED, but it's been 8 months since the "Color will support R3D files natively" and still nothing
-FCP's L&T mode is a beast. I am hearing that that is changing soon...thankfully.

So...I think it's fair to ask RED about getting the post workflow on the front burner... The lack of information from RED makes these things seems worse.

Now that the camera stuff is out there, I also hope we get some news from RED and Apple.

Deanan, you're quick on posting...I will say that. You beat me to the reply. :-)

Good to hear that stuff. Hope some things deliver soon.

We have had several very painful projects due to some of these challenges, mostly because we deal with interview clips that are very long.

Thanks for posting. Information is good...but delivery is better. :-)

The long clip problem turned out to be related to how leopard changed the way it handled lots of files and got sloppy with it's caching. We figured out a way around it for v3.60.

We get feedback from alot of people using the programs and if there is a problem we try to find a solution quickly but it usually requires good and detailed. We only found out about the long clip problem recently because two customers gave us details on the problem.

In general though, there are tons of people we talk to that are processing many hours of footage daily without issues. It may not be super fast but we are working getting things faster and offering more solutions.

In the next 3, 6, 12 months you'll see more and more cool stuff to build solid/fast workflows from.

I agree I was being a little unfair, unfourtunatly life isn't fair much less business. I never said Red had perfected it's little issues and I welcome any advancement with the post tools. That bieng said I can figure out a way around 90% of the issues with a single step in another software package. This ain't DV and a RAW workflow will never be as simple as shoot edit repeat. That's where the benefit lies and why it's finally truelly analogous to film in workflow.

for all the problems there have been with the workflow, everyone i've come across has turned out completely fine after some tinkering or research.. and it's only going to get better. I've conformed about 20 commercials and other short projects now, and after a bit of extra work it's all been fine..

maybe i'm weird but i like it..

I'd be happy just to get some written instruction information on how to use all the RED post software instead of having to guess my way though it.

small question:

does all the companys who announce native support, have the same access to the raw files like rc, ra and scratch?

I second that. There's still lots of guessing. It's sometimes fun, sometimes scary and annoying...

Mike-Thanks for the life lesson. :-)

With things changing so quickly, I can see RED's arguments for not having manuals/tutorials/etc. a little. However, hopefully they can get some of these bugs worked out and do something soon. A little information goes a long way.

I am a business owner. We keep the RED very busy. I do not think it's enough to just say "figure it out yourselves." I've already wasted a LOT of time trying this on a project that featured about 30 half hour interviews. Almost nothing worked, due to the bug Deanan mentioned. It was a horrible post-production experience with RED and I know they don't want us to have those. I wasted a TON of time "trying and testing."

So...hopefully RED can soon get to a place where a normal, professional workflow for most basic applications is in place with some basic documentation. I'm optimistic, but I'm not going to stop bugging them to get there. :-)

Red Post Game changer #1 - Adobe native support. Coming VERY, VERY soon - expect the public beta to be beta - but I think Adobe is gonna get more feedback than they have ever seen

Red Post Game changer #2 - Hardware accelerated R3D debayer. I'd be willing to bet ... NAB 2009.

Right now, today, I can play 1080p Redcode with a 2K debayer out of the camera and capture DPX in real-time with AJA VTR Xchange - and ... if you are CLEVER ENOUGH ... you can adjust color and ISO while playing back from the camera ... we already do this.

Only a matter of time before we get a little post hardware love ...

Yes, hardware acceleration would be quite welcome! I would be happy to get out the credit card for a card that could save me a TON of time.

Sorry, Adobe, but I'm holding out for "Game Changer #3" and that would be Apple FCP & Color support. Hopefully at least by NAB '09...

Mark, capturing out of the camera? Ugh. Thought we were beyond that. :-)

"With things changing so quickly, I can see RED's arguments for not having manuals/tutorials/etc. a little."

I haven't seen actually make such an argument. It's just the default situation.

The answer, of course, is to put more people on task. Hire a technical writer to organize and (learn) break down the workflows into easy step by step documentation. Red has gone crazy with ambition, but they need to expand personnel to keep up with what's already needed.

RED really needs to get on the ball with the post production workflow. Show after show I work on has repeatedly said the same thing. "Well, we were thinking about using the RED camera until we found out how difficult it would be to post". I was hoping that one of the big announcements on Nov. 13 was going to be how they made the post workflow a lot easier. I'm beginning to feel that RED is concentrating on making the cameras and putting post on the side burner.

Post production.

Post production.

I'm beginning to feel that RED is concentrating on making the cameras and putting post on the side burner.

Well you are wrong in that assumption.

What exactly is it that you are waiting on? (just interested)
