Plane or plain?

Hello Anthony - Do you mean plane or plain? I'm not sure what DOP is. As to aspect ratio, I think the Lomo anamorphics are 2:35, but not sure; embarassing because I own a couple, but haven't had time to try them out. - John

What do you mean by "plain" anamorphic lenses. There are many different types of anamorphic lenses, just like spherical lenses, each series has its own characteristics.

Anamorphic lenses are going to flare differently from one series to another, most common anamorphic lenses are Panavision then the Hawk's. These are round front anamorphics. What I have seen is that the Lomo's are considerably softer than other anamorphics, but some flare wonderfully, some not so much...

What you also have to consider is the recording format when shooting anamorphics. When shooting 4k 2:1. 4k16x9, and 4.5K, you have a larger recording format, maximizing the use of the sensor. Anamorphics were invented so people could record more data to the film by squeezing the image more horizontally to cover the entire film plane. Well when shooting on a digital sensor, we already record on the entire film plane, 4K 16x9=4096x2304. When you shoot 4k anamorphic you record 2764x2304 pixles. Its greater than 1080p, but its not the resolution of 4k 16x9.

So why shoot anamorphics if you loose recording area on a digital sensor? The characteristics of the lenses... The bokeh and flares is what makes people want to shoot on anamorphics, its just up to you to shoot the tests to determine what lenses fit your project.
