  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's the deal??? Build 16 or not?

Hi all. . .

I'm in the middle of a film shoot. . . but I'd love to try out Build 16 on the camera to get the wonderful gains apparently made possible.

The trouble, of course, is that, if we find a bug in Build 16 that would keep us from shooting, we apparently will NOT be able to go back to Build 15. That puts us in a pretty awful spot.

We're about 1/4 of the way through the picture. What would you do? Stay at 15? Or roll the dice to get the glorious new picture quality?

I wish there was a way to go back. . . just in case.

Stephen

Build 15 or 16?

Build 15 or 16?

Are you happy with the image quality that you are getting at the moment with Build 15? If so, wait.

B 15 or 16

B 15 or 16

The point being, Build 16 does have better image quality than Build 15, but if you are part way through a production, and you are happy with the image quality you are getting - remember all the fabulous footage shot so far has NOT been Build 16 - you don't need to make the change right now.

I wouldn't upgrade if your in the middle of production. There is noticeable image quality difference in build 16 vs build 15 which will affect your final product IMHO. There will be time after your project to have fun with build 16.

Yeah. . . I'm really torn. . . I want the image enhancements. . . but I SURE don't want to have a dead camera.

:-(

Can anyone tell me what their view of the image enhancements are? Does it yield a lower noise floor? (Did I mention that I LOATHE video noise?)

Stephen

easy...don't do it. it would be really stupid to risk it.

we have an aerial/plate shoot in Boston for the show im on in a couple of months(we wrap in two days), and im hesitating to upgrade the productions cameras just for the potential matching issues.

I suppose they changed the loader software (guessing from the two-step process).

I'd not change in the middle of production if you can avoid it. If you have some very difficult dark shots that desparately need the better noise, you may want to dare it. I'd not say that noise has decreased massively (from a very short test). I'd say you can steer away from it more easily since you have better control of exposure, but with experience you can do that in 15 too.
OTOH, the noise definitely looks better – more 'cinematic‘ than video.

Hope this helps, but the ultimate decision is up to you.

Regards,

Uli

Asking for trouble by going to 16 while during a shoot...just plain asking for trouble. But if you do, personally i don't want to hear complaining on REDUSER about it if it goes pear shaped! BETA release for a reason!

But this thinking goes to all regarding this current beta build. It's different where as you cannot go back to save yourself. Personally, i'm not going to upgrade build 16 until it's a release stage. Period.

No Risk No gain.

Options are many B15 REDs around me in HKG next month.
Why not push it to the limits to make me Happy or Sad ? Who knows ?

Can anyone from RED chime in here?

I think it might be that they want the best firmware on all Cameras from now on... (which is understandable) but it would still be good to be able to roll back until build 16 is out of beta, no?

There are fundamental changes in the way some of the camera's components function so the prebuild-16 and the build 16 work in conjunction to make sure some of the internal components are upgraded in the right order. B15 is not compatible with these upgrades.

Is the new Red Alert backwards compatible? Can I work with older footage?

Yes. You can work with older footage on the new RED Alert!

And "beta REDCINE 16" is a few days out.

Jim

"beta REDCINE 16" is a few days out....

is that for both platforms? Windows and Mac?...the only thing stopping us from going to build 16 is post workflow.... We have a commercial for a big client on july 2nd and are hopping to use build 16 but we prefer not to be locked down to only one platform (ie Red alert on a MAC). We have 2 Macs and 8 Pcs and we use all of them two render the thousands of frames out of Redcine....
