  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Whats the best Macro lens for red cameras?

Well if you want the best, these might be it.

First question is what are you planning to film? Second question is, which focal length do you want?

As for Cinema glass, I would say a master prime 100mm macro, but as you currently have Canon CN-E the best option would be the less expensive GL Optics Canon 200mm F4 Macro. I personally use the Canon “L” 180mm f3.5 Macro, it does the job well enough, and there is also the option of a Canon L 100 Macro f2.8.
 
Lately I've been taking close up shots of hand made fishing reels. My 85 looks nice, and I used to own a 70-200mm canon zoom. But I was kinda looking for something that was my go to ECU lens when renting isn't an option.

the Canon 100 macro L is superb lens and very reasonable price. Canon 180L also.
 
A few years ago I was seeking the best macro lens available and tested several still lenses (from Canon, Zeiss, Voigtlander, Leica, etc.) and my favorite by far was the Leica 100mm 2.8 APO macro. The Leica and Zeiss were the sharpest but the APO correction, overall color and organic rendering style placed the Leica a few steps ahead of the Zeiss in my tests. And the APO correction makes a world of difference on reflective elements, like water.

OK since you aren't talking about the 'best' - For a while I had a GL OPtics PL 100mm Macro. Did a pretty fine job for a reasonable budget.

Totally get where you are coming from - but the 'best' is always determined by a bunch of qualifiers... which you didn't give until after people made suggestions.
 
I wasn't trying to be slick at all. And honestly I would love the best, but also know I will prob need to rent the best. I should have said the best I can afford and I think I know what I'm gonna do. But I'm gonna do a little more research
 
Zeiss Otus ze with various Canon extension tubes. Macro APO. Use them on your CN E primes.

Otus has floating elements. Macro performance isn't likely to be great as they will be misaligned with extension tubes. Focal length is a bit short, too, maybe the 85mm will be okay.

For rental the options above seem good (never had the budget to use one).

For purchase (in EF mount) the 100mm f2.8 L is a great lens. For product photography tilt/shift is standard so the 90mm f2.8 TS-E would seem the best choice. It's optically very good, too.

Never worked on the high end for video but typically see 90mm tilt/shift and 100mm Canon L for mid range stills (high end uses tech cameras).
 
you could also just get a set of diopters for your current lenses.

Not a bad idea, and definitely the best for the money. The Canon 500D is a two element macro far better than a standard single element filter and would complement the 70-200mm nicely. However, it wouldn't be "best of the best" on par with the rental zooms here.

For product photography, when stopped down, it would be close enough for me and most people, though. I'm sure I couldn't tell the difference except maybe wide open.
