  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Whats the best colour space to export for DPX

Thanks guys, I'm starting to understand how this works now,
for HD release I'll stick with redspace or rec709.
If and when I need to goto film, I'll hire a house that knows there stuff.

THanks again

Stricko

Well yes but my recommendation is to do that in a proper CC not in RC or RED Alert (sorry Graeme). Send the files to a CC with secondary grading etc and apply REC 709 there and grade.

That's my two cents

Yea for sure, we use digital fusion for serious grading, so I would spit out from redcine with mild adjustments, colorspace set on camera rgb, gamma rec709 or redspace, then output dpx lin files for fusion.

Or when you say apply rec 709 , do u mean export log dpx files from redcine then apply the rec 709 gamma in the CC prog?

Thanks

well yes, I would export log and let the pro's take care of the rest

In RedCine RedLog and Camera RGB are still the best settings when your route is RedCine Debayer and CC in a dedicated system such as Lustre, Scratch, Speedgrade or Flame, Fusion, AE etc... Fredriks adivse makes a lot of sense for any delivery (HD, SD TV, film-out). Please check on Build 15 stuff wether you can find information in the whites by checking lower ASAs, say 200 ASA when exposed for 320 ASA. Very often you will find valuable detail in the whites.

RedSpace is a very nice setting for all the folks that use RedCine as their main CC system (which I don't do) or if you want to create proxies for editing in RedRushes. REC709 in RedCine never worked for me.

I'm not sure wether it has bee said before but REC709 is a colorspace you automatically work in when you see your footage in a properly set up HD grading suite. RedLog will look way to bright there but it has the advantage that all possible information (when debayred properly see Fredriks posts) is mentained for the best possible grade in this particular viewing environment. Probably I'm just repeating what other said better....
