I can't keep up with all the news!! Does anyone know what Red Express is meant to be (mentioned in reference to the Red Ray - "Red Express media")?

I'm guessing it's some sort of Flash based SSD in a 5.5" format. Looking at the Red RAY it looks like a SLOT LOADING drive on top, and a Cartridge type door on the bottom.

So it looks like the top slot is maybe for DVDs and the bottom door is maybe for this "Red Express" - like you said maybe some cartridge-type thing with flash memory?

Feel a bit like some geek studying pictures of the grassy knoll...

Could well be an ExpressCard-based device. With native PCIe bus-speed capability of 2.5Gb/s - it certainly offers a lot of potential - although at the moment there is nothing in the marketplace that fits the bill, so it would be proprietary design (although RED CF more or less is anyway).

I hope that's what it is, because SolidStore will be forward compatible with ExpressCard formats, but anything else and I'll be struggling.

It seems to me that RED is more likely to adopt a format that has some level of adoption already (ie. ExpressCard slots are in lots of computers, so that's good. Anything would require a stand-alone adapter, so that would be bad.)

Express cards would make a lot of sense speed-wise, although I can't see how it would interface with that bottom draw (which incidentally says "push" on it!)
Unless it took two of them (some kind of Raid 0 type array for speed)?! Seems to be a lot "dual action" in today's news (Scarlet's dual CF etc) and I guess Epic will record to dual discs in the Red Flash (think that's essentially two SSDs in a Raid 0 array). Dual action now seems to be Red's preferred way of handling the big data bottlenecks, storage-wise. Whatever it is it's designed to interface with the Red One (and maybe Scarlet?) but not with Epic, so maybe there'll be some announcements soon about what this will be? :detective2:

The difficulty with something like RAID striping with CF is that you have to always treat those cards as an inseparable set, which is complicated when you're dealing with little CF cards. The most obvious way to work around this is the have a larger enclosure that holds the cards. So a 'magazine' consists of a small cartridge that contains 2-3 CF cards. They stay in the magazine for the whole process - when reloading a new magazine with more cards in it is used.

There is a huge benefit for RED in not having to invent their own storage format - it makes it a lot easier to have supply (to avoid things like the great P2-shortage or '06 or whenever it was). However in practice for RED that hasn't been the case as only very few CF manufacturers (one that we know of) have been able to produce media to spec.

I've only had a very cursory look at the new products from RED, so I can't speculate to much on what various drawers or slots might be.
