  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After dragon what do you think will come next? A full frame sensor for lowlight? It seems from my limited knowledge that increasing resolution at this point would be kind of worthless, but getting more light into the sensor would be extremely beneficial. I've gone from an F3 to an Epic X and I really miss the low light ability.

Depth Mapping/a depth channel! It has been hinted at before and would be a game changer. Think of the MAJOR advantages this will have.

1) Artificial depth of field
2) Keying an image at depth rather than color.
3) Different color grades at different depths. Endless possibilities here.

Sounds interesting. I'd love to see some kind of change other than another resolution boost. I'm still on the fence over dragon. It seems like the lowlight it just slightly better

#1 is pretty wonky in practice still. I wouldn't have terribly high hopes.
#2 is all but impossible. The hard stuff is semi-transparency for keying. If you want a really crunchy gross key then you can get that already from even a crappy key.

I used to have really high hopes for these kinds of things but then I wrote a 2.5D renderer and realized very quickly all of the limitations that just can't be overcome without "deep" data. The only way I could see this all working would be extremely high framerate (Say 200fps) and tack sharp glass combined with a very large sensor (like 617) sized.

For anyone who needs a good simple "breakage" use case think of a semi transparent sheet of glass. The "Depth" might be 1" from the lens but you'll know nothing about what's inside the window.

8K or 9K FF Dragon sensor camera (Preferably 9K for an 8K finish). Picture the Dragons dynamic range with a slight boost with more pixels and larger physical sensor size, hopefully with A.D.D. built in. Imagine having those super clean shots directly in R3D format without needing to render as a post process. Now that would be crazy. A new module incorporating xlr, timecode in, some power ports, audio controls with a levels meter, and UHD Proxy recorder built in (capable of recording high speed footage real time), plus a couple of 4K outputs for live viewing or external recording. Add a shoulder pad similar to the F5/55 and we're set.

As my friend Peter Hodgins likes to say... 'Son of Dragon' is next...ha, ha.

Small and lighter would be nice. I know Carbon fibre just came up but not affordable to most. As bad as it sounds, plastic is lighter then metal.

Don't want a cheaper plastic Epic but perhaps a plastic shell instead of the metal (like say Sony's Fs100/700) might help be lighter despite less durable. Don't know it that would take much weight off depending on what's inside the Epic but I think Red has that advantage over Alexa to be light and small as a DSLR and the quality of 6k. Currently it's small but damn is it ever heavy for handheld.

Oh wow please not smaller and lighter...My setup is already so compact, my follow focus almost hits my EVF in shoulder rig mode. I like the size.

I just want some improvements on what they already have! Improved audio, as FAST as possible blackshading(hopefully under a minute) evf and touchscreen outputs without the need for a new module, and anything else extra the want to throw in! Extra DR is always nice, the human eye is rated at 21 stops I think, so we can just keep improving that until we are there. lol ;)

I agree with more DR and a bump up in resolution.

Large formate, call it digital IMAX, 65mm or whatever. Hasselblad c mount, 9K+ resolution for 8K output and pretty 4K with that Baraka shallow DOF look. 8K will come along someday, and I expect Red will want to lead the way. But I think 8K will be for special exhibits, large wall size screens, etc. I don't think it will be a widely used household format for some time.

The technical advances curve is begging to flatten out, meaning huge leaps in quality and technical advances will come a bit slower in the future, but they still will come. The last five years saw such huge advances and the Dragon is the top of the hill at the moment, improvements will come but they will be at a more modest pace. I for one will be pretty happy with the dragon for some time. Of course if it could do 6K at 1000 FPS, well...

Okay maybe not smaller but definitely lighter would be my hope.

Yeah. I agree 8K will perhaps become the alternative to the Imax market. Perhaps regular films will be shot eventually in 8K to add further detail and smaller pixel size. Sure 8K too will become cheaper and easier to handle.

I liked the wireless idea - wireless focus, wireless video/audio, wireless controls, but it would be nice if everything (well perhaps everything but the lens control) be built-in to the Red Epic/Scarlet without the need for external additions/modules. Use the existing wireless in the camera and an iPad.

A projector would be neat (with LED bulbs that's great on bright lumens, contrast, and resolution).

Personally, I wish a Red Volt2 would last 2 hours per volt. Probably asking too much there but still is a dream.

Agree better audio would be nice, or even that button mic built by Red.

Oh well, so many dreams. So many toys but not enough money.

Hi
Full support for all Red cameras in faraway countries like India.....
Thanks

Bycicle hand grips... and a new light no module shoulder camera design. Same specs (this is the more difficult) and with no heat and no spinning parts (fan).

+1 on that
