What's in a RED RAM?

[Julio Quintana]

Dear God, that's all I need. More user errors that make my camera look bad. You can buy a 640GB RED drive for $900. The only reason upgrade to SSD is because it is more reliable. That advantage goes out the window if people are making their own.

Folks, on a bad day I'm one evil sarcastic bastard. I've had a few of those days in a row now, so I'd like to apologize if my abrasive style of discourse has offended anyone.

[Jay Gannon]

But my point remains. If I know what I'm doing and I'm perfectly aware of the possible consequences, why shouldn't I be allowed the option of doing whatever it is I wish to do with the equipment I've purchased?

You don't know what your doing, if you did you would know that all you had to do would be to reverse engineer the custom firmware, re-engineer it to support your SSD's, flash your own SSD's with the custom firmware you have rewritten. Then possibly reverse engineer the camera firmware, re-engineer it with supporting code for your SSD's and then your good to go.
If one was suitable qualified they do have the option to do what they want.
Technically.

Basically the more locked down the system is the easier it is to maintain a level of certainty over the interoperability of parts. For something thats producing footage that is in some cases worth 5 figures per second thats a pretty darn important thing to keep secure. Hence RED keeping control over the media drives. This happens in all industry's, try buying a 3par storage system and asking them to let you put your own drives in it. Trust me you don't know what its like until you own something like that, you have to get an engineer out from the company to move the rack across the room (Thats not a joke, your not aloud move the thing you paid 8 million dollars for without the company there) oh and your not allowed sell it after your done. Yep, thats right.

So all in all we should be happy RED lets us play with the thing at all

Thats my rant for the day. I hate 3par
