  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Whats going on here HDcam / Red

Thanks Alex I will give it a try the pic you done looks a lot better than the original

Paul
I wouldn't agree that the pic I attached looks better than the original Red shot.

I was just trying to show that there is a lot more detail in the Red shot, even when being sharpened to the same extent as the HDCAM shot.

8 bit or 10 bit?

8 bit or 10 bit?

Was it HDCAM or HDCAM SR?
Someone wrote it was 10bit HDCAM. HDCAM is 8bit, HDCAM SR10 bit.

HDCAM 8 bit compression as found in f900 has an effect of increasing apparent mtf/sharpness, when compared to uncompressed 10 bit output from the same camera.

The effect is subject dependent.

Many thanks for the time you have taken to contribute to my post. Today I have tried a RED 17-50 old type lens and the pictures are much better than the 50-150 I also tried a canon 300mm with great results. So it looks the problem was the 50-150.
Anybody got comments on the new 17-50mm Red lens, or other lens recommendations

How am i not surprised, i have just never seen either the 18-50 or the 50-150 look as sharp as other lenses. But as i said previously, i know people that do have good ones but it is always my number one thing to look at after setting the 'back focus' (for easy understanding) on the Red One. NEVER use those lenses to zoom in and focus then zoom out for your shot, they just don't cut it.
My 18-85mm RED PRO lens does look sharp and holds focus quite well though...big difference to the base model lenses. It does drop off ever so slightly midway through the zoom and regathers towards the end but after testing it with a Panavision tech he said that it was good and as good as any other zoom. As there seems to be a major difference between RED's base model lenses and their PRO i would only stick with the PRO range, and hence why they are discontinued. But if you found a good one for cheap you are laughing...i have seen them for as little as US$1200!

And you must mean the 'old' lens as the 18-50mm, because the new PRO lens is a 17-50mm.

Thanks Brigham. Thats the info that can really help. As I am about to purchase lenses I obviously don't want to make the wrong decision! If like me you have no experience of using primes, as I am coming from a video background and using zooms. it's a nightmare trying to get the best bang for you buck. The only prime I have used on the Red One was a cooke S4i 40mm and those pictures were great. Any other info on lens recommendations would be very helpful.
My current work is documentaries where a zoom would be an advantage, and music videos.

Yes I did mean old 18-50 and new 17-50
