  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's Everybody Shooting With Now?

I'm an amateur who videos school plays and musical recitals: the resulting SD DVDs are sold and 100% of the proceeds go to the school to support the theater (that is, I charge zero for my time and materials). I'll never be a Pro (I'm retired (early) from a somewhat successful software engineer career).

Cameras: Sony HVR-V1U x 2; Sony DSR-PDX10 (especially to capture uncompressed audio at 48kHz x 16 bits).

Editing: FCS 2 on MacPro G5 2.5 Quad; Firewire 800 7200rpm drives; HDV generally transcoded to ProRes 422 (1440x1080) (note: I've used 60i previously, but will try 30p HDV for my next shoot).

Audio Editing: when necessary (actually rarely), ProTools LE (Digi002 Rack) or ProTools TDM HD3 which is mostly used for my amateur pro-audio studio.

The V1U is not great in low, uncontrolled lighting which is what you get in school productions. There is no chance of a separate video only shoot. That said, the videos are greatly appreciated by students and their parents, and the theater can really use the money for off budget equipment (better lights, mics, cables, set building supplies, costumes, etc.).

The Scarlet looks like a terrific, cost effective step up beyond HDV if we can still get good audio, it has low light performance at least as good as the Canon XH-A1 (should'a got those instead of the Sony's: too late now), and with BluRay HD close at hand even for amateurs like me, the possibility of 1920x1080p60 is appealing.

I guess 1080p60 is not on Bluray's spec.

Panasonic GS-120. :)

You could do much more with much less man.
I really like your short!

PS: Are you taking the Scarlet route?

produced a feature ("White Knuckles") with two HVX200s, wrote and directed another feature ("Heart of Now") with two HVX200s plus 35mm adapters, and produced and directed a short ("I F*cking Hate You") with two HV20s with 35mm adapters.

Hey, thanks for watching my short :). I saw your avatar on Vimeo ;).

No, it was shot on the HVX200 [if you were referring to the camera used?].

I use the GS120 for home movies and tests. It's a great little cam! I love it

[kisses the great little cam].

Otherwise, I'm certainly going the RED route.

At first, I was suicidal [which is to be expected ;)] and I was planning to get a RED One package on bank-loan.

But now I think I'll start with a Scarlet and later... I'll see if I can find a rich uncle in America :).

[Actually I do have a rich uncle in America, but he's a dick and we don't talk much with him at the moment].

So, yeah..

I'm hip..

I mean,

I'm RED...

I mean,

I'm Scarlet...

I mean...

Aargh!...

...You get the picture. :)

Rado,

What would you do "If" you had access to a Red NOW? Do you have a project ready lined up? A finsihed script? Where are you in your work?

DogDay

P.S. I agree his short is great and shows much talent and promise.

Thanks guys,

You make my heart warm. :)

Yeah, I have a script for a short, which is close to being finished.

And also a feature-project, but it's in early development and farther away in the future.

Otherwise, I used to work as an editor in a TV, but quit. Not much progress there...

Now I'm looking for a better job and I'm also having big RED dreams.

:).

And you?

I am putting together the pieces for a feature...I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Are you looking for grants? doing everything yourself or you have a producer?

Is this highjacking?

DogDay.

Is this highjacking?

A bit. :whistling:

Well, I'm looking for everything, grants included.

Producers piss me off, but if I find a normal one - yeah, I'll work with him\her.

I prefer "her". Women are less ego-centric, me thinks.

Otherwise - Me, Myself and I. :)

DogDay, will you shoot in the States or in Sweden, or?

Never Sweden ... Ever.
Thats a statement.
Another European country though English language.

I let you know soon more details.

Take Care and keep fighting!

But about the ego thing usually it takes one to know one. Its good to make things happen and sometimes you have to give something to get something in fact most of the time its that way. Make finding a suitable producer a top priorety and it will still be tough but not all up hill.

Z1U for zero-budget narratives for 27 months. Complaints: noise in low-light (though black-stretch feature helps), 60i complicates editing at 24p (using Sony Vegas, btw), too much depth of field.

Scarlet may be the one.

Why not Sweden, dogday?

The Scandinavian looks like a perfect place for filmmaking. Well, maybe rentals costs are higher but...

My first personal camera was the Canon XL-1sE -- the PAL version. PAL's 25p was much closer to 24p than NTSC, and this was a couple years before the DVX hit the market.

My partner got a Canon GL-1 when it first came out and we still have the camera to this day, although it's starting to seem like it may be giving up the ghost.

In June 2006 I sold my XL-1 and we bought an HVX. At the time it didn't even come with P2 cards, and we could only afford a single 4GB card.

We've got one more shoot to do with it in May, then we'll be retiring our HVX in favor of our new RED ONE. We're going to sell the HVX before the new models come out from Panasonic; we figure that we can sell it for enough to cover a Scarlet when it appears on the scene.
