  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

what's curren situation if 8*10 core xeon is possible now???

I'd like to know what the real benefits could be building a system like with a supermicro server chassis, capable of holding 8x decacore xeons. This would mean 80 physical cores and 80 virtual ones.
Would they be able to do all the processing for debayering??? would this system render out 8 times faster then a 24 core mac?

Probably no one have ever tested such a system, but as ppro and ae are optimised to use all cores, is there any disadvantage when building such a killer system with onboard storage?

really like to know. seems multiple times of what's available right now from prebuild systems. I suppose this is the time, where things become possible.

That's not a workstation, but rather a server.

In any case, generally speaking such a system should improve performance dramatically for most video tasks. That's because video is "embarrassingly parallel" which is computer scientist jargon for so easy to parallelize that monkeys have already done it by accident. I mean, you can just chunk one frame to a processor, and let them each bang away.

(That's not efficient for i/o reasons. Parallelizing it well and reliably is a different matter, and is what occupies the time of folks who actually develop the software.)

So yeah that could chunk out some video data pretty quick, and Premiere or FCP X could readily drive it to perform reasonably well.

That said ... that's a hell of an expensive way to solve the problem today. That box, empty, is $8500. It requires the same ECC Ram you need for a Mac Pro, and the 10 core processors we are talking about are ~$3000 each.

So, without RAM or a video card (or the ability to run OS X) your mega computer will cost $32000 USD.

It seems far cheaper and easier to get a Rocket or two for the foreseeable future.
