  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

whats a simple, cost-effective matte box that accepts 80mm fronts?

Looking for a matte box, something to use with my leica-r's that are 80mm front (and other lenses that have 80mm front i.e superspeeds i think). 2 filter stages is fine, I would only need to stack ND + haze every now and then. Dont really have a preference for clip on or rail mount, but if its rail mount then 15mm LW only....Looking to spend under 1k.... What do you guys recommend?

Not a big line of products under $1k. But there are some descent ones. I will talk from my own experience, and LWS-15 or clip-on only:

Cavision - pricey and robust, but I don't really like it.
RedRock - cheap, solid, heavy
Tilta - pricey, solid (RedRock clone)
Formatt - clip-on, light, cheap
Arri - like LMB-5, robust, light

I mostly use RedRock and Formatt, regardless of a price and looks.

I like that shoot35 one. Seems well priced and well made.

Thoughts on the RED matte box? I can get it for slightly under 1k with my edu discount.

I have a battered cheapo Konova one that will take 80mm fronts. Cheap as hell but still working after taking the brunt of the red falling off a 6ft high dolly. Not a great piece of kit but great for the money. 2-stage. 1 rotating. 15mm swing-away.
