Don't know this for sure, but I think Jim is considering offering custom made REDS for those on this forum who are asking for changes in Scarlett, RED ONE, and Epic.

Before contacting him to order one, just be aware you will have to pay for any R&D, re-tooling, and hand made parts. (This could be very lucrative... for RED)

Are you for real?
Who told you this?

Just ask them... "Will you make me a camera with this change, that change, and the other change?" I'm sure their answer would be "Sure, let me see, this change is gonna take x amount of time and will require an additional cash outlay, and that change is gonna take x amount of time and materiel, and of course the xtra cost, and the other change... well, that's big... beaucoup R&D for that... Graeme, Stuart, Deanan, all stopping what they are doing to get THAT one done.

Yes, I believe we can fix you right up in about 4 months. You will have to pay up front of course. That will be $213,000. Oh what the heck, For you... $200,000 even!"

edit: So sorry, will have to re-instate that $13,000 we knocked off. That's Jarred's part for sticking his head in the door every couple of days and asking "Everything going alright?"

RED please hurry up and serve number6 his camera... He's going nuts.

BuhBeebBuhBeebBuhBeeb (going? GOING?! YOU THINK THIS ISN'T NORMAL?!!!):usd:

(I really like the idea of serving the (first) camera in hurry up mode...thanks for lobbying:) )

Unfortunately, my impression is that the RED camera is very R&D front-loaded. This is why Jim can afford to give RED ONE owners a $17,500 discount on EPIC - they have helped pay for EPIC's R&D and individual EPIC units probably cost, say, $15,000 to make. So he still makes a little money and retains the good will of his customers.

So that's good but it means that it probably costs many millions up front to make the first Scarlet and then maybe $1,000 to manufacturer each individual unit.

This means that the legendary "scarlet with interchangeable lenses" will cost millions - especially since he has to engineer the lenses too - and is likely to make only a handful of sales, since most with the need for interchangeable lenses will be much better off with a RED ONE.

It would also cannibalize sales of the RED ONE and that's Jim's real baby, so he can't have that.

Just as badly, it would cost time. I don't think any of these projects are easy and I am sure the RED Team is working very, very hard to make them happen. He would have to hire more people to design the new camera and the bigger a company is, the less focused it is. Jim knows he has a great team and he may increase its size, but only at his pace when he finds the great people he needs.

I'm amazed this is so difficult for people to understand.

hilarious, number6! some people obviously don't know how good they got it.

$250k for an exclusive custom camera can easily be balanced by a sound biz plan. But in reality it needs more than this...

In the mid ninties, on behalf of three broadcasters one each from Australasia, Europe and USA, I asked a camera manufacturer (NAC) to modify 6 of their ($50k) cameras. I had around US $1M in the virtual kitty. But it wasnt enough for the manufacturer to take his R and D team away from developing their next model.

Excellent use of sarchasm number6!

The sarcasm is funny because it's true.

But allow me to take this opportunity to make a serious feature request:

A subforum on this website where everyone who has a feature request can talk about their serious, out-there, and downright cockamamie ideas.

You want a firmware upgrade that'll sync TIFFS with your 1999 Palm Pilot and your 2009 toaster oven? Great! Post it in the feature request forum.

You say it's an outrage that Red One shoots 4K but you have to reframe the stuff in RedCine to get the footage to cut together with footage you shot on your Fisher Price PXL2000 in '95? Post it in the echo chamber and see how many "Yeah, Jim!"s you'll get.

C'mon. This camera -- and I mean the one that exists, Red One -- is a superb piece of work. But it needs a few very basic things to be perfect (or as perfect as these things get). These things it needs aren't features. They're really basic things:

- Some sort of elegant, preferably on-board focusing solution that will help ANY user (i.e., those with LCDs OR EVFs) be confident he or she is in sharp focus.

- Reduction of noise in the image, especially in 2K.

- Rock-solid stability in camera booting and operation.

- Some workflow improvements: Log and transfer into ProRes at 1:1 and integration of R3D's with Color.

(Also, I'm told that some work needs to be done in the area of sound. This I can't say for myself, as I've not recorded sound with Red One yet.)

I am optimistic that all of these things are on the way and/or being worked on. But we're not there yet, so please, let's keep our eye on the ball. And let's let Red do the same.

:) Great use of language and spelling. There are so many spelling mistakes on REDuser.net that it's difficult to tell when it's a message thing or just an error. Thanks for clarification.

Not to mention he is free to refurb and resell.

Expect Discount REDOne's about the time Epic launches... of course there would have to be a mechanism to prevent you from reselling the refurb to get an Epic. :D
