  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What would make Scarlet a perfect camera?

At the risk of being flamed, the perfect Scarlet should have a 3,072 x 1,728-pixel, 16:9 native imager, a 4.8-inch LCD, HDMI and HD-SDI out, dual XLRs (mini or regular), battery, and adequate storage. All for $3,750.

I still haven't heard why Red picked such a wacky 1.89:1 aspect ratio or 3,072 x 1,620-pixel count. At 16:9, 2:1, or 2.40:1, it must be cropped/windowed. It is hyped as a 3K camera, but at the aspect ratio it'll be used probably 90% of the time -- 16:9 -- it is at most a 2.8K camera. And that's before debayering.

That makes a lot of sense. It would be nice to have a true 3K camera. 2.35:1 and anything around it looks best if the DOF is really wide, it's the classic cinema look. 16:9 is best for so many genres and formats it just makes sense to have a true 3K image at 16:9 or at least very close to 3K. I would still buy it if didn't have that ability, though.

Another thing that is really vital for me if I was to purchase Scarlet is the low-light performance. When recording video, the Canon 5D Mark II obliterates the RED One in low-light performance. Scarlet, as well as all the future RED products, really need to address this issue, especially if Canon is serious about manufacturing DSLRs that record video the way the 5D Mark II does.

Here's an example of the difference between the RED One, and the 5D Mark II:

I am also intrigued to find out about Scarlet's performance in low light versus the 5D MKII.

I'm also wondering how much a similarly equiped version of the fixed lens 'complete kit' will cost for a the non fixed version...

This isn't really just for the Scarlet, but a dual CF card unit that is programed to overlap clip handles and alternate between the cards.

I have read that people are having issues with long takes on the CF cards. I understand the limitation is the file size. So as one file is closing and another opens there is a loss of frames. So, if the unit could shift to a secondary card to fill in the gaps or checkerboard the coverage as to prevent this loss.

I think it could make alot of RED users happy, not just Scarlet.
