  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What would be the best way to do audio for music vid

No offence, but you start by using the search feature and then read some on the forum, this subject has been covered several times in quite a few threads.

But the short answer is that you plug a microphone or two into the Scarlet.

Leo pretty much nailed the coffin there. I use a Zoom and or other external recorders with some sort of mic hooked up then go through PluralEyes to sync my audio/video. I'd imagine this would be a pretty good way to go. I'm pretty sure RED is also releasing a module with XLR inputs that will hook up to the back of the camera where the RedMote would go.

Thanks just wondering we are new to RED sorry...

No worries. There is just alot of info on here. All you really have to do is search. It's pretty easy to find and decently available. Unfortunately with RED everything changes, dates, specs and prices. Usually for the better, sometimes more expensive and it's hard to plan/schedule for unless your buying an Epic M/Red One MX.

This is the important bit:

You don't need a separate audio recorder. And you don't need a separate audio module. Scarlet (and EPIC) brains have two independent microphone level channels built in on the front of the chassis. They are everything you'd look for in XLR, but using a 1/8" TRS connector: balanced input circuits, 48V Phantom Power, 24-bit 48KHz. You don't need a separate XLR solution, just an adapter.

That being said, there are items like the A Box that provide the "adapter" solution along with extra stability (you plug the XLR into a chunk of metal instead of just an adapter cable) and mounting preferences (you can put it on rails or a cheeseplate). I could imagine not everyone would be happy running XLRs to the front of their camera. But you do still have to run the TRS cables up to the front.

If you want to get away from using those connectors entirely, I'm afraid there won't be anything immediately available outside of a standard external recorder - at least not that I know of.

If you are just looking to record a scratch track, there are some great "button mic" options out there. This is my favorite (props to Tonaci Tran and REDMODZ):

That's the Sony ECM-DS30P Electret Condenser Digital Microphone. Available in the middle of jungle for about $31.99 with free shipping.

If you know the answer to a question, it's just as much effort to post the answer, as to post "this is already posted, go search for it." Why not use the effort spent to make a post in the most efficient and positive manner possible, by posting the answer?

If a question has been asked and answered 100 times, it's just as much effort to post the answer when someone asks the 101st time, as it is to post "go search for it".

And you won't stop anyone from asking the 102nd time. Unless you post the answer, and they happen to read that post.

If you don't feel like posting the answer, then don't. But if you're gonna take the effort to post, why not contribute something? IMO, "go search" contributes nothing to the forum. I doubt it's a sudden revelation to anyone asking a question that they can do a google search or a forum search instead of engaging in a conversation on a forum.

Yeah, no one likes thread police. :D

Try checking out macrumors, every other post is "use the search function" or a "let me google that for you" thing lol...it's pretty sad. :D

How can I capture audio with the scarlet once it comes out, We shoot Music VIDZ need to sync

For a music video, if you want to sync your footage to audio then you don't need to record scratch audio on location. Sure, it can be helpful, but a better way would be to use a timecode slate, or, if you're on a budget mimic one with an iPod/iPad. I've always found it to a much more efficient way of syncing footage with audio, especially when using the multi-cam feature of your NLE of choice.

I thought it was mini xlr onboard?

Sorry but you don't want to capture music from any live source for a music video. you want to do that in post production. Any audio recorded during production is for reference sound only.

Did n't see Simon's post before I posted. He has a much better solution. the audio is synced and will help you in the editing sessions much better than any other solution.
