  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What will we do when it breaks?

any good ideas on protecting the right side... other than duct tape ?

I've been thinking that it would be awesome if someone produced a thin latex sheeve, custom molded to the red body, that would cover the whole body and would cover all the buttons and ports. For a specific port you wanted to use, you would carefully puncture the latex at that portion, the buttons would all be operable though the latex. It'd be a Red...condom...for lack of a better description. It'd be an expendable for any kind of risky situation (sand, moisture, fog, etc).

there are no buttons on the right side, regardless whoever makes these side-condoms or full condoms that people have been talking about since day one is gonna have alot of happy customers :)

I just wouldnt be making them full body.. unless you live in the north pole.

red rubbers ! I like it ! maybe it could be a semi disposable item that you tear as needed. Sort of a sticky cinefoil.

Huh, I haven't seen anyone else talk about this idea. Regardless, it's the logical thing to do. I'd make them full body, then tear off as needed. So...you leave the vents covered for cold work, or you leave them partially covered for high wind sand (beach), etc. I'd also like to put the card in first then put the rubber on.

the body is the heatsink.. just leaving the vents open isnt gonna help you very much, and will lead to heat failure very quickly if you put the whole body in latex. You can of course, do whatever you want :)

I vote for rgdfilms custom cap idea.

Why not just little individual custom caps?

Because I want more than just the ports, that's why my idea goes further than what Jarred was referring to. I want a rubber that also covers all the buttons, the cracks of the cameras, etc. Sand and fine dirt can get it a lot more places than just the ports!

Maybe a RED portabrace cover or something?

But a body condom? I think that is overkill.

I'd love to be able to access the camera menu, also from a remote control. Even better if it is wireless.

Cheers,

Just to chime in here, I recently witnessed Ted's personal camera lose the joystick button while demoing the camera here in Tokyo.

Even bearing in mind that his "no name" camera was a pre-production unit, I was impressed to see that it wasn't broken at all; rather, there is a tiny hex screw inside the button itself that tightens down on the joystick's shaft, enabling field repair if it does come off. It was fixed in under a minute. This camera didn't have the new guard that the 100+ bodies have, so I'm more than happy to sleep easy knowing that this problem is well and truly licked by now.

I did suggest that Red offer a small bag of "bits" and relevant Allen keys etc that match things like the little hex screw and joystick button though, just in case... I'd buy one for each camera.

Cheers,

Paul

I trust that the above improvements have solved any issues with the joystick, but I thought this idea was worth posting anyway:

How about adding USB keyboard support, so that the arrow keys, Enter and Back space of any USB keyboard could be used in an emergency.

Not sure if this is possible, but if so, it would be an easy alternative method to control the menu.

the joystick head came off of a pre-pro unit "singapore" that i was using very early on and i had to use a small visegrip to control the camera...worked fine in a pinch (no pun intended).

Oh, that's a good idea!! They already have the USB port, and this could save someone's ass, big time.

There had been ideas of a bluetooth control once. Not from RED.
Like with the keyboard, it might of good use for a sometime-future-upgrade to include an official bluetooth stack in the software along with an SDK...

The keyboard idea from Casey should be comparably easy to include...in my thinking.
Might ease up changing roll-naming, project-file (to come ?!-) etc. too.

Given the shape of the camera body, you might be able to get these guys interested: http://www.camerarmor.com/
They only do DSLR's at the moment but if the volume is right they might consider it.

As far as I can tell, the back half of a Red One is just a powerful little Linux computer. Sounds like it's time for Red to Open Source the firmware and let the community develop what we need. When someone builds in something great, like USB keyboard support or drivers for a Bluetooth dongle, it could be added to the 'official' release.

This would ease some of the burden on the Red engineers so they can continue building even cooler stuff.
