SO as I finalize my R1 config I was wondering what will void my warranty. I know that the Birger mounts are a no go ( so long my nice Canons) But how about an Optitek Nikon Prolock. Is this the same deal? Install it and void your warranty? Or am I better off using the Nikon mount supplied by RED.

Isn't the fact that I have to make the alteration myself with the Optitek or RED's mount grounds for my warranty to be voided. I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

by the way, is Optitek still around? I have sent them some emails asking what the price is for their mounts and what is the availability...but all I hear is the sweet sounds of crickets....

I'd also like to know what devices we can/can't hook up to a Red. How about other manufacturer batteries? Is there a list somewhere of approved items that won't void the warranty?

P.S. I had the same problem contacting Optitek. Send them another message, they'll respond eventually.

Birger? I thought Birger was approved...

Only the IMS that wasn't approved.

When I called RED last week to put the final touches to my config they told me that the Birger mounts are no longer supported...there are some that were grandfathered into the program. I have no idea what IMS is though

Sounds kind of fishy that the Birger Canon mount now voids the warranty and before it didn't. What the heck? So what about the people that bought the mount when it was approved. Did some Red dwarfs come in and screw with the mount so now it doesn't work anymore, lol.

Have a look at the Alternative Mount overview sticky for some general info on which mounts exists and what their warranty situation is.

And yes, Birger used to be approved, but that has changed last month. Any mounts that have not been approved before mid November 09 are now voiding the warranty, and the trade-in. The reason as I understand is that Birger has made significant changes to the mount since when it was approved by RED.

If you have bought a Birger before the mid november cut-off and Birger has registered your camera with RED, you are fine to go.

Seems like the roller coaster has finally come to a halt...

Important to realize:

Anything that is currently approved can be unapproved.

I would think any 3rd party mechanical mount currently approved by RED would stay that way. But, buyer beware. It might not stay that way; the Birger mount didn't stay approved.

There have been a lot of unexpected changes over the last two years and my guess is that there are more to come. RED works hard in their communication to make sure that we all realize "everything is subject to change".

I think this instability/uncertainty for users (and RED) will diminish with the new Epic/Scarlet program because RED has probably landed on a design they can age with in contrast to RED one only lasting a couple years.

By the way, don't forget the new camera bodies will be accepting Canon and Nikon lenses--with RED mounts this time.

I would like to clarify that mounts that had been approved and purchased prior to the November announcement continue to be approved.

I think that the Birger falls into a very special category, and should not be taken as an example on how RED treats its own warranty system. As far as I know, the BIRGER mount is the only piece of equipment that had its approval revoked. If anything, the Birger case should not be used against RED, but more as proof to how far they are willing to stretch themselves for their customers.

Just to clarify on this; after semi-eternal delays, Birger sent a mount to RED for approval. After many more delays and many changes, the first Birger mounts started being sent out, and some of them fried a number of cameras. After some back and forth, and quite a fair amount of good-will from RED and especially Jarred, some sort of agreement was found to allow end-users to install the mount themselves, while keeping the warranty and trade-in intact. Many months, and problems, later, Birger repeatedly left RED out in the cold by making announcements before they were cleared with RED. It was at time comical - in a very tragic way - to realize that the first time RED heard about changes or future products was here on Reduser. At the same time, changes continued to be made to the inner workings of the mount, to a point where the mount had changed quite drastically from the one RED had originally approved. Also, BIRGER customers kept having problems with their mount, and called upon RED to solve it. In the end, RED pulled the plug. (RED had originally pulled the plug already a year before, but reconsidered after an outcry from the community.)

I think if one had to sum it up in one sentence, it would be like this: BIRGER is a very solid built mount that failed due to too many broken promises and poor communication skills.

Martin, I tend to think it is a little more then that.

It is vague to say things like, "Just to clarify on this; after semi-eternal delays, Birger sent a mount to RED for approval.". These delays have nothing to do with it. And the Red One was never delayed? It worked perfectly when it first came out? No need for firmware updates?

"After many more delays and many changes, the first Birger mounts started being sent out, and some of them fried a number of cameras.". Why was this? Improper mounting? Hot mounting?

Hmmm, sounds like more opinion then fact, "...quite a fair amount of good-will from RED and especially Jarred...".

"Birger repeatedly left RED out in the cold by making announcements before they were cleared with RED.". And we have never heard anything about this until when?

He said, she said, not fact, "...to realize that the first time RED heard about changes or future products was here on Reduser.".

"...changes continued to be made to the inner workings of the mount, to a point where the mount had changed quite drastically from the one RED had originally approved.". Inner workings? Drastically?
I have a Birger mount and I fail to see how it has drastically changed.

"Also, BIRGER customers kept having problems with their mount...". Your right some did have genuine problems but after reading many of the comments I would venture to guess that some didn't follow all the instructions. That is just a guess though.

I don't think it is appropriate to post such opinions unless there are references offered up. I want to see diagrams of these drastic changes.

I think that we need to remember here that Birger is not perfect but neither is Red. If we start pointing fingers we would waste our time.

There have been to many statements that are meant to be taken as credible only because of who makes the statement.

I have customer loyalty to Red and to Birger. So it is in my best interest to see both sides.

Those that have no loyalty to Birger but only to Red would by default make statements that would be skewed and subjective.

Martin:

I have been a long time supporter of RED starting with my deposit at NAB2006. With the RED/Birger announcement at NAB2007 I realized the implications and became a RED/Birger enthusiast/evangelist and heavily promoted RED and have been the impetus for a number of RED camera sales.

I probably have the most knowledge of this situation of anyone except the two parties directly involved, and with all due respect, much of your post is inaccurate and/or misleading. Birger had its problems - that have been pretty heavily discussed in the forums - but RED wasn't lily white in this either and probably could have provided better support and communication. I won't elaborate because I don't think there is much to be gained by it. I value my relationships with RED and Birger as companies and Jarred and Erik individually, so it actually pains me to see where this situation has gotten.

Regarding the warranty - as a manufacturer myself I didn't have a problem with RED making it clear that they couldn't warranty any damage from other attachments to the camera and that there was a potential for damage that would be quite expensive to repair. And I could even understand RED not wanting to figure out if there might be hidden problems on cameras that are actually traded in. But I don't see the justification for saying it voids the new option of Stage 2 where you simply keep the R1 and get a discount on Epic since it really doesn't affect RED at all at that point. (I'm obviously talking about cameras where the normal 1 year warranty has expired - as will most by the time Stage 2 becomes available to them.) So I hope they reevaluate that policy.

Coco, did we not communicate?

Lol some people amaze me.

Just to give you one example.. the mount I approved ( plus the instruction manual for instal I approved ) for use on the RED never connected to he i pins.. which was our biggest concern. that cable was tucked away in a little slot.

Somewhere along the way the mount "Hijacked" the ipin connector and started pulling signals from it, which we were not made aware of nor informed, and then of course we started having someone "complain" every time we did an i-pin protocol update because it broke the Birger (which should not of been using it anyways ) etc. etc. etc. .... this is just one example of many. Lets put it to bed already.
