I would really love to share this one and ask, what you think it was shot on. It's a small production made possible by friends, not something I normally do. What camera, what lense, what do you think, or is it obvious?

I sould say it is either a 5D or 7D. I'm leaning more towards the 5D because of the shallow focus in some of the shots. Highlight roll off and skin tone remind me very much of the 5D.

okay... first answer and you got me.
I just tried to get some 5D footage into the RED forum.
Blame on me...

Don't get me wrong, the video looks great, great concept as well. I own a red and a 5D, and I'm very familiar with the look of both of them. Nothing wrong with shooting on the 5D, I've seen some fantastic results. I've even used it for a couple B camera shots on red projects.

Thank you for your kind words... I don't own a RED but shoot a lot with it and claim to know it's look. But even if I would love to shoot all my projects on RED (MX) it's simply that I own the 5D and use it for projects, that otherwise couldn't have been made - like in a discussion in another thread - it's not about undergoing industrie standarts, there are simply projects that wouldn't have been made at all, if not out of favour. And besides that, every job needs the tools that fit the job.
Thank you for your response Stefan...

I watched it a little while ago, before anyone had responded, but just coming back now. It's obvious that it's shot on a Canon by the way the highlights and skin tones behave. Definitely on a DSLR due to the skew on a couple camera moves and the overall shakiness in some spots. Definitely not a GH1, even hacked, it was way too clean and didn't feel like micro-4/3. I could see some moire in the grey jacket and a few other spots. Like Stefan, I would've guessed the 5D due to the extra shallow DOF in some spots, but if you were to tell me it was shot on a 7D or T2i, I would've believed you.

All that said, I thought it was nicely done. Made me chuckle when she pulled her dress off and he swapped his 35mm for the Contax 645. I know it's completely subjective, but the shot of her smoking seemed disruptive and unnecessary.

EDIT> I'm having a tough time deciding what lens you primarily used. For some reason the EF 35mm f1.4L keeps coming to mind. But then there's shots that feel like 50mm... Hmmm.. Maybe I'll watch it again and come back.

Thanks for watching Jeff...
I used a shoulder mount (when not on sticks or dolly) so the shakyness would be my operating skills and not the camera, I think. I also think the highlight roll off makes it very obvious.
Funny that I never thought about her smoking to be disruptive, I think that might be up to where we come from.

The shakiness or motion wasn't bad, it just seemed to have the weighted motion of a lighter camera rig vs. the RED One. But it was indeed mostly the highlights and flesh tones that gave away the Canon camera, that and the skew, especially in the close-up walking down the street toward the beginning.

Could be, not sure what it is about that shot. I think what is disruptive about it is that it's just that one shot. It felt somewhat out of place like if you had a quick shot in the middle there with her in a red hat that we had not seen before and then never saw again after that shot. Maybe it's because she wasn't carrying a handbag and there didn't appear to be anything in her jacket pockets when it was on or when she took it off. I didn't see an ash tray or other signs of smoking in amidst the items in the apartment, particularly in places you would expect them -- window sill, next to the glass of wine, and yet -- pop -- she's got a cigarette. Yes, I'm a bit freaky that way, looking for things. But maybe I missed something, only watched once... Will go back again, I want to see if I can figure your lens(es), since you started the guessing game. :)

Where did you shoot it? St Pauli?

Very, very well made. From both a story and a technical standpoint. I loved it. And for what it's worth, I liked the cut of her smoking. Added to the feel of the photo shoot as well as externalized a bit more of the models character/personality.

Emmanuel... it was near St. Pauli called Schanzenviertel.
Thank you Joel, glad you liked it.
Thank you Frank. We shot everything at night and the backyard was very ugly, that's why I needed to blow them out. I frosted the windows and used a 2.5 HMI through each window.

I watched this a while back after watching another one of your videos. I like all your work Mr. Frank. I appreciate a good music video with nobody lip syncing or playing instruments. Tells a nice story in a beautifully simple way. My applause to you.

I don't want to highjack the thread, but I thought I could offer a tougher test. I shot a commercial in Cyprus using both the 5D and the Red One. Can you tell which shots are from which camera? Most are fairly obvious, but others not so obvious:)

Note: This in no way means I think the 5D is as good as, or even close to as good as the Red One. I've built my career on Red and I love that camera like a first born. Sometimes the budget decides this stuff for you. This is intended as a fun way for us to pixel peep, test our knowledge, and that's it. Have fun!

I would say that guy that talks into the camera was shot on RED, most of the rest, especially outdoor on Canon.

Frank

Correct on the interview and correct about most of the rest being Canon 5D, but which outdoor shots are Red? Can you find them? Hint. There are exactly 4 of them.
