also if you used paypal, they have some good buyer protection. They will make it work if you find out its stolen.

Don't be to sure about that. PayPal protection is not so secure as you might think especially when dealing with things that cost as much as a scarlet.

I would ask for the serial number of the camera and check with red who the owner is and see how that correlates to what the seller said. Picture of serial number and hours used is not too much to ask for.

Also check if the seller is listed here, quite unlikely he sells a scarlet and have not made a single post.

If the vendor is not prepared to provide a serial number for purpose of an encumbrance check, don't just walk from the deal. Run from the deal. When folk were doing a bit of a panic sell of the Blackmagic "big" URSA cams, there were a few plus URSA Mini4k "too good to be trues" turning up on eBay plus a few genuine good deals. Publishing the scammy eBay links on public forums got them shut down pretty quick by internet-savvy people who knew how to make that happen.
