If I order a Scarlet today, I won't see it until when? I have not tracked everyone's order numbers, but is it safe to say January? Also, I want a Nikon mount, which isn't even available. So, I really can't buy today, right? Then there are all those RED owners selling off their systems. I thought the RED was a better camera? I know it doesn't have the promised Dragon upgrade path, but what about Red's obsolescence promise? Or, can that change too? I see Red camera with all the extras running at about $15K and I can get one now. Is anyone thinking along these lines as well?

R1 seems to be a pretty different camera as far as the way it is designed despite sharing the MX sensor with Epic and Scarlet. I believe RED's promise about obsoleting obsolescence with R1 ended up being solved through the generous EPIC-X upgrade path options for R1 owners. I would not count on a R1-MX being upgradeable. I would expect R1-MX to become essentially discontinued when the Dragon upgrade is released. I could be wrong, but for RED to continue to build new upgrades around their old R1 design may become counterproductive. If I was investing in a camera right now, I would not buy a R1-MX, though it is still a very nice camera and better than Scarlet in many ways for the time being.

As for Nikon mount, the nice thing about Canon EF mount is that it has a shorter FFD than Nikon, so as long as you dont need a mount that adjusts aperture on Nikon lenses without an aperture ring, you can get inexpensive nikon mount adapters and just use your Nikon lenses with proper FFD on Scarlet

Hard to say when you'd receive a Scarlet ordered now... I ordered Nov 3rd and I dont even know when I'll get mine. I probably wouldn't recommend ordering today and start booking jobs with your Scarlet before February though... The only thing that is safe to say is that you dont really know. I wont be too disappointed unless mine doesnt ship until January, but definitely see that as a possibility given RED's track record and the very slow trickle of reports of Scarlet shipping so far.

EDIT: I was corrected below, you CAN get Nikon F mount adapters for a canon EF mount that will control aperture on Nikon mount lenses without aperture rings.

Noah,

Off topic kinda, but are you saying that you cannot use something like the Fotodiox Pro Nikon G to EOS adapter on the Scarlet?

It was my understanding that this would work? Thank you for clarification! (Thinking about using a Tokina 11-16 Nikon lens on our Scarlet)

Oh, I wasn't aware they had adapters like that! Looks like it should work. Impressive they can fit in an aperture control lever and still keep the thing to 2mm thick :)

Ok, nice, lol, you guys scared me there for a sec.

BTW John,

If I had to buy a new camera today and receive it by next week...it would be one of the many crazy R1-MX packages available for under $15,000. Remember that in some ways the R1 is superior to scarlet (4.5k / 2k 120fps) and can be bought in a full kit for much less. I see the R1-MX being relevant and competitive for at least another 3-5 years due to the fact that it was so ahead of its time.

I don't know, with the size and affordability of Scarlet, once they start shipping in large quantity (possibly in a month or two) I would not want to be someone with a R1MX package unless you got it for $12k or less. Then again, you could always buy an R1MX used right now for a project and sell it when your project is over and your Scarlet comes. If you dont mind taking the time to buy/sell its probably still quite a bit cheaper than renting. I would put in an order for Scarlet before 2012 to avoid the price increase, though. That said, R1MX will still be asked for for at least a year, as there is often a lot of lag before a lot of shooters and producers realize what those on the cutting edge already know, that [insert camera here] (scarlet) is the next big camera for low budget productions.
