Like everyone and their mother I was on Monday morning to get drunk on Scarlet and the nab news. I come back a few days later and the everyone has a hangover and apparently somebody trashed the place, 'cause Jim won't party with us any more! There are so dang many posts, I'm having trouble piecing together what happened. Who was trying to take over the asylum? Why were people so pissy? Any links?

Thanks.

Also, I'll be playing with 1132 soon, so if there are any future Red users near Philly/Delaware who want to play too, just PM me.

I`ve been intrigued by talk of `noise` on the forums, things called soccer moms and rumbles of discontent and conspiracies about competitors stiring things up. Basically, I don`t have a clue either. It could be histeria. I saw some once, hard to tell when its virtual. I think maybe events such as NAB get everyone high, but what goes up tends to have to come back down eventually. Also, Jims probably feeling a bit burned out from steering the Red ship for an extended period, I`m guessing he`s been excited, stressed, happy, worried,
reassured, drunk? right, wrong, right, hungry, brave scared, nicotine poisoned and asleep in his car, more than was usual, before he started Red, and a few other people probably also. The good news will be when he`s refreshed, and realises his beachhead is secure. A good example link to some forum `noise`, so we know what it is for future reference would be useful..and it better not be any of my posts!

Chris,

I worked NAB at another vendor's booth and got to spend less than 15 minutes at Red. 10 minutes of that was watching the 4K presentation (which was mind numbingly good) and getting to sweep the booth to peek at the Scarlet and Epic prototypes (also amazing).

By the time I got online it looked like a gun fight had broke out and several got shot. So I too am trying to figure it out and how it will affect the community here.

All I can figure out is that a vocal few felt that Scarlet should have been different, and that they said it in very unpleasant terms.

Others did not get how huge Red Ray is, and others are trying to figure out if Epic some how invalidates there Red One.

In the midst of that, Jim told those speaking in unpleasant tones to build their own camera/camera company.

That is how I interpreted it, without out adding any additional color to it.

So if someone could better clarify my understanding of this, I would love to hear it too.

The announcements at NAB were a little too different from what people had prepared for, some people freaked, shot from the hip. That's the danger with speculation, one tends to imagine the perfect feature set, an expectation that can never be realized. Like a hopeful damsel anticipating a flesh-and-blood Prince Charming, destined to be disappointed.

Jim got tired of hearing about unrequited expectations, realized he had been spending too much time on Reduser, ignoring other pressing matters, and readjusted his priorities.

The smoke has pretty much cleared, the dust settled, and people seem to be back on track. The game now is offering nuts and berries and other tasty things to Jim so he'll forget about running his empire and come back. I think that's it in a nutshell.

In short - people got pissed that Scarlet wasn't what they wanted (mostly centering around having an attached lens, "waaaah! Put a Nikon mount on it") and demanded that they have the world for $3k. Others speculated, endlessly, that RED wasn't telling the truth and that Scarlet would be much more once all the 'accessories' were added (which they, for some reason, seem to feel will be required).

Then there was EPIC... A handful got snippy about EPIC, feeling they'd been duped, and that the appearance of a 'better' camera meant their RED One (or their reservation for a RED One) was worthless and junk. Seemingly ignoring the fact that RED is offering an unprecedented upgrade/buyback offer on the EPIC when it's released.

A lot of people decided to voice these frustrations toward Jim personally, accusing him of lying to them, and ignoring the community (hah!).

And there was the general NAB surge of newbies.

All in all, it was a busy week.

If thats the case, I wasn`t as far off as I thought. As for EPIC, it looks great, but for me there`s a big difference between 40k (if thats accurate) and 18k, so there is still only one camera in my mind, and I feel lucky it came five years or more earlier than I`d expected, and at the upper limit of what I could borrow. I think its right for some people to wonder if they`re doing the right thing by not waiting 12months for a Red One, that may have the upgraded sensor already in. Despite the amazing value of Red One, I really need 60fps at 4k to justify borrowing the money, cos for me its a stretch.

I don't quite think it's blown over yet. Some people are still pretty touchy. In time....

Interesting...

Well thanks for clearing that up guys! It's a shame to hear about the negativity, because this really is one of the more positive and enjoyable boards.

I will say, I'm intrigued by the fixed lens on Scarlet. It seems like Jim could have done to the broadcasting world what he did to the film world, but hey...NOT complaining. 3k for 3k? Sweet lord!

The Scarlet backlash was expected and predicted by some a few months before NAB. I remember a thread starting a while back saying that letting speculation go unfettered for too long might be dangerous. Seems that guy was right.

As far as the Epic freak out, I don't know what the hell that was. Red One is still by far the most camera per dollar of anything on the market today and you can trade in your used camera at full value if you feel the need to have the next great toy, even if you've used it for a year and have been making money with it that whole time. And let's not forget that by the time Epic is released, the Red One will still look as good or better than cameras costing far more money.

I didn't hear much furor about RedRay, mostly confusion about what it will or wont do.

Jim needed to leave for a while if you ask me. Having people moan about products that are ahead of their time and well underpriced when compared to what's on the market around them would piss just about anyone off. We've all become spoiled selfish brats if you ask me.

Well, as with some of the most acrid, crtitical posts towards RED ONE in the past, and the endless request for this or that feature, every time such things happened, I looked at how many of the "concerned" or "betrayed" voices actually had reservations or you could glimpse, through their posts, that they either worked in the industry or had serious inttentions to do so. What do you know? 90% of them never meant to buy a RED and never will, and I'm sure an equally high number of SCARLET detractors will never buy one either, regardless of price...

The hardware is already great (come on software!), but people have been encouraged to make suggestions in my opinion, and products do improve through such feedback (even from those who don`t buy this time), but not a few months before a product release, and there has to be "feature lockdown" at some point, or nothing would ever be available.
