Hey everybody,
careful, a little rant coming up.
I have been noticing this for quite some time but now it's starting to really annoy me. Google's search results are more and more personalized and (mostly annoying) locally filtered. Meaning: I'd just read about the announcement of the new IMAX 3D camera and thought, well, let's look what IMAX writes on their homepage. So as google is my starting page in my browser, I typed in IMAX.
Some of you might know what followed then: the first 10 links where about IMAX theatres in my area, if I wouldn't like to visit one nearby etc etc. IMAX.com which, to me, should be at least among the first 3 results was more than half the page down.
I do not have a google account and I am not interested. I've used google solely as a search engine (for a long time it was the best search engine there was imho). Now Google just uses my IP adress to locate where I am (roughly but I'm sure they are working on that). What I find a little impudent is that you cannot really switch that off. You can delete your cookies and tell Google not to use my other searches as a reference but it will always use the IP adress.
Anyone else annoyed? Workarounds? I found Scroogle.
Is there an alternative search engine I should consider?
I'd love to hear your input.
Thanks for listening.
