  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What sort of light was used for this shot in '24' season 7?

Unfortunately it doesn't show up very well on the old laptop (ATM the only machine I own with an optical drive), but in some interior shots in CTU, the agents' faces are lit with this really beautiful, warm light. If any of you have the show and have easy access to a TV, have a look at this from Disc 3 (2am-3am):

On my CRT TV the colour is much better and the warmth really does show. I don't know why I'm not seeing it here.

She is lit by more than one light. And most likely all soft light.

I thought the show looked a lot more "edgy" than it had in past years -- this was the only season shot on Alexa, since the previous were 35mm 3-perf film -- and they clipped a lot of whites and made a lot of the London scenes look very desaturated, particularly the exteriors. I preferred the older look by Rodney Charters (who won a couple of Emmys for the show), but each is perfectly valid.

There are probably behind-the-scenes materials on the Blu-rays that may give you some set shots that will give you an idea of what specific instruments and techniques were being used. I'm seeing some mixed color temperature issues with the shot you posted (bluish highlights), but I think they were going for that kind of "high tech" thing for the CTU.

Look at her nose shadow and eye reflections, her key isn't that soft judging by the nose

Mixing a couple of lights here. There is a blueish Keylight from camera top frontal (look at the short clear shadow under the nose, shadow is warmer and the small catchlight) Some boards (could be separately lighted) underneath the face / or just the desk. Bigger warm light source from right but also not too soft. Soft frontal fill from above. Also backlight feathering her left side. Key is the different CT as Marc already pointed out.
