Hey all

I am a pc guy. I have a few pc's that I built that I use for editing. My main computer with 2 xeon 8 cores has been reduced to 1 8core because one cpu failed. The computer is from 2011 so its nearing end of life. I just had a baby and work from home so I am heavily considering getting a laptop to work from home and at coffee shops (for sanity) .

Someone mentioned a MacBook pro maxed out with red rocket-x is really good. I have never owned a Red rocket-x card but would love to hear some real answers on the MBP with this combo.
What is export times and playback like with 6k footage in resolve and premiere pro cc? I mostly export out 1080p but could see myself doing 4k as well.

I usually take a project from start to finish. Here is all I do:

Work with native 6k raw files
Rough edit
Color Correction
Light Graphics
Color Grading in Davinci Resolve (with secondary color grades, LUTS, masks, and denoise)

So here is the big question. Could a MacBook pro 15 maxed out with RRX and 10gbe Raid connection do all of the above? While still offering decent editing ability and minor color grading on the go?

I also know that Apple may release a new MBP here soon with Thunderbolt 3. Could this be a game changer?

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Jonathan seems like a bit of moderation wouldn't be a bad idea. Some of the suggested solutions in the other threads are expensive solutions squarely aimed at servicing a DIT environment. Sounds like your situation is a bit more casual. Maybe just scaling downward will reduce the gear anxiety and allow you to put savings in your kid's college fund account.

In your shoes I would wait for the next gen MBP with USB-TypeC ports (TB3 inclusive). I have a mid-2015 15" MBP with 2GB nVidia M370X discrete GPU that is certainly the fastest laptop I've ever used, but the current architecture is overdue for faster I/O, DDR4 RAM and newer bus standards. I expect new MBPs by WWDC in June, but it could slip into August if they can't source key components in time.

Cheers - #19
