  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

what setup would you buy with 10 G?

Take your $10K and buy a used fully loaded 1-Ton grip truck which you can use with ANY camera. Generate income with the truck to use toward the purchase of a Scarlet when it does ship.
Work out a trade with your local mates, use of your Grip Pkg for use of their camera.

$ 4750..............Scarlet 8x Fixed
$ 300......Scarlet Module Adaptor
$ 1250................Battery Module
$ 1750..............Base I/O Module
$ 8050

You get one CF side module, 2.8" monitor, redmote, internal baterry and charger. You are "operationally" sound. Any additional shoulder rigs and recording modules are just frills. A side handle, top handle, or dual CF module could be seen as necessary by some but are just simple addons.

As for recording media you can find 8gb CF cards, for $35-$65, capable of recording raw images for "normal" usage, NOT HIGH FRAME RATES. For that I would suggest the Red Brand of CF cards. Or the RedDrive or an SSD drive that can be connected via a cable that for the life of me I can not locate the link to. It was mentioned by one of the members a while back it was in the price range of $200-$300.

Will the charger that is supplied with the fixed lens scarlet be able to charge the batteries for the dual battery module?

Edit: I found the link.

the SSD drive is going to be the way to go for storage. i would definitely shoot for that over CF cards... but the fixed kit should include at the least an 8gb card from RED... we hope. or else it's not really a full package like they wanted to release.

Also has anyone seen any more information on the Red Gunner? I am very interested in this particular accessary.

someone had the suggestion on another board I think to get both cameras, take the modules from the fixed apply them to the interchangeable, resell your brain/fixed lens to whoever and then use that money towards the mini prime set. That may put you a bit over but I'm not sure, i had it figured out but its not in front of me. I'm in a similar situation and I think thats what I'm going to do, although I would love to wait for the S35, only thing is then, no miniprime package, which is extremely affordable

no joke, I was thinking of doing that. not a bad idea at all...I mean sure I would love an S35 but I really wanna start shooting my feature in may
But ya never know, the date could be pushed forward or back..as Jim says COUNT ON IT!

A lot of people here say if they were limited to 8K-10K for all their RED gear they would go fixed - going fixed means I have money leftover for various things not included in the kit, plus I need a few more lights, etc....

That idea wouldn't really work. no one is going to want to buy a fixed scarlet from you for a price that would make your plan worth while if it does not come with the accessories. The price they would have to pay to buy your fixed scarlet and then the accessories they would need from RED would cost them MORE then it would cost them to just buy a brand new fixed scarlet package from RED that came with the accessories.

Your plan doesn't make sense for the person buying your fixed scarlet. The numbers don't add up. Unless you just get lucky and find an idiot to buy your fixed scarlet for way more then they should.

well, yes and no. A dealer or rental company would be able to make use of it seeing as they make a habbit of buying extra modules/memory. Also, anyone that has a red one but doesn't need all that modules may be willing to get this one simply for diversification purposes. I'm sure someone may give you 2k for it

How about a Scarlet setup for 25-30K? I'm curious how that changes things, since it now clears that 10K bracket that makes Fixed kind of an easy decision.

I'm kind of in the same boat here. I don't have much money to spend ($10K) but I, like most cinematographers, am all about glass so if possible I want to get the 2/3" cinema because of the possibility of using the RED miniprimes or even some super 16 glass. I would feel restricted if I was stuck on one fixed zoom lens.

Do you guys think its feasible to build a working 2/3" cinema rig for independent features, shorts, and commercials in that budget range?

I'd get a s35 body (which is $7000), a 5 inch touchscreen ($1600), side CF module ($500), RedMote Pro ($1750), battery module ($1250) and module adapter ($300), and some CF cards (currently a 4 pack of 16GB cards is $1400 - hopefully when Scarlet comes out 32GB cards will be similarly priced) which comes to $13800. Then you have a good amount of money to spend on glass, tripod, etc.

You could also throw in an IO module ($1750 or $2950 for base or pro respectively), and maybe a Nikon or Canon mount ($500 each) so you could use cheaper still glass. And a SSD module would be good too ($1500), so the package would probably be more like $16050 to $18750 + glass.
