  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What motors do you guys use?

Hi guys, we're trying up a few loose ends and I'm trying to compile a list of all the motors that we are going to test ours against. We are planning on doing some testing that will compare the torque, speed, power consumption, weight, and noise of various motor brands and publish our results along with pricing comparisons. We are getting sick of hearing things like "high torque", "fastest", "precise" and "quiet" with no numbers to back anything up... most of the manufacturers never publish any significant data to make an informed buying decision.

So maybe you guys can chime in and let me know what you're using.... Here's a quick list I put together last year, maybe you can let me know the pros and cons of you're experiences too.

Preston DM1
Preston DM2
Preston DM3
Arri CLM-1
Arri CLM-2
Palomar M-One
Scorpio
MK-V
Heden M28VP
Heden M28VPT
Heden M28VT

that covers all the ones I've come across. Looking forward to seeing the results. Can you also test for interference with Marell, transvideo and other wireless 2.4GHz video transmitters? I know the Marell 2.4GHz interfered with the Arris Wireless controls on King Kong, we had to go back to UHF for them.

Thanks for the recommendation Dale. The guys over at FreshDV were talking about doing a roundup last year but I don't know if they got that moving or not. This is more for my own education than anything and I really want to make sure our stuff stacks up and we have something to point to when people have disparaging remarks :)

I believe the MK-V system uses FMG and Hedén digital motors.
The picture on their pricelist is a Z-FMG.

In Denmark the DM2+1 and Arri CLM-2 is the most used.

I have the M-One for the BFD.

I must admit I like the Preston type motor. The noise of the M-One can be annoying at times, and it's not that often you need that amount of torque. It would be great if yours offered both :-)

By the way, the prototype looks a bit thick from the photos I have seen. What's the minimum distance between the gears in a FIZ setup on the same side.

Hey Dale, The current move down here is to 2.6GHz. Several have recently sent their Transvideos off to France for the update.

Hey Curt,

Will you be able to ship the FF with Arri Fisher 12V or 24V RS ends for power? I'm doing a show on 16mmSR3s, and I'd like to try Impero out. Of course I could get the D-Tap ones lopped off here but it might be nice to get those options straight from you guys. You might sell more cables too.

We'll have some options soon. I have a few Arri Fischer cables on my desk.. just need to make the pin out drawings. I need to get some other stuff done first but its on my big list of things to do.

Teletest video transmitters are another common one in the UK:

Steadicam guys also use Modulus and Canatrans.

Think it's going to be a big job to test all of them for interference though!

From my research these are the prices I found...
Heden M28VP $5,154.00
Heden M28VPT $5,595.00
Heden M28VT $5,100.00

That doesn't include the cost of the controller.

Curt,

I use FMG.6's at least that's what the motor says. I would appreciate the head's up on performance.

Might I ask where these prices come from? I was just quoted a price of just about half that from their US distributor, Abel Cine Tech.

Just curious. I do not sell these motors.

Jim,

I got the pricing from a Chrosziel price list. It was about a couple years old so maybe they have come down. If its wrong then I stand corrected.
