  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What might happen if I update the firmware using power from the attached sidehandle?

The readme says I have to detach the side handle and also run the AC power. But, uh, the place I'm at right now, we have regular blackouts, so, with the fear of bricking the camera, I updated the firmware using the side handle's power.
So far, so good, but what could go wrong? Or what did go wrong that I don't know of yet?

Thanks

I think it would go wrong only if you don't had enough battery during the installation of the firmware and the camera went off before full instalation. That will be big trouble... But yep +1 for blackouts in my region, will do probably the same as you...

Seems like the smartest way to update would be ac power plugged in with a side handle battery in. That way if the power goes out it'd switch over to the battery.

'cept that the sidehandle should be unmounted during firmware update...

The upgrade instructions state you should remove the side handle & redmote, so I don't think it's smart at all.

If I were you, I'd file a support ticket asking this question. We can all guess, but the folks at Red should actually know what the risks are, and how to avoid them.

Oh thats a good advice David, I thought they might see the topic though, but yeah. I'll try that!

What about plugging camera into a backup system like you do a computer. upgrades don't take a ton of time so a decent sized one should hold you through an upgrade. Just another idea.

My UPS just died a week ago, and I couldn't wait to test playback =)
I'm getting a new UPS on Monday, but I'm just being curious.

You can use a REDBrick. they suggest wall power since there's always the possibility that a brick or plate could die.

A brick is def better than using the sidehandle. the sidehandle has its own firmware that will install when you re-attach it after a successful brain firmware update.

Thanks jason ;)
I don't know if i make the upgrade ... i have a lttle fear... if someone make this upgrade like this, tell me :)
i'm in 1.6.42, just open the box of the epic X yesterday ;) it's very fresh and i just discover the "machine" !!!

Here is what the support had to say regarding my question:

"You could potentially brick the camera, this is why we always recommend using AC power. I understand your situation though and a fully charged side handle should be ok if you have unstable voltage coming from the wall"
