  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What kind of lights are these?

Any fluorescent tube still needs a ballast so it would be some sort of personal wiring project to make a bare tube with a cap on each end with wires to run to the ballast, but I'm sure one could put something together that is cheaper than buying a Kinoflo, but keep in mind that most productions would just rent the Kino harness cables, ballast, and tubes for this (probably) one-time rig.

So when you consider the time savings in just picking this stuff from the rental house and plugging it in versus hiring an electrician to build this rig the day before the shoot, it may work out better to just rent the Kinos.

The Kino ballast is high frequency so you have a lot of freedom in frame rates, though you can buy an electronic ballast that operates at a high frequency. But a cheap magnetic ballast would limit you to certain frame rate / shutter speeds.
