  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is the most time efficient process for R3D editing in Premiere CS6?

I'd like to import either 4k or 5k footage, edit, and then be able to export back out (assuming there is no additional composites or post processing to the footage) with the most efficient codec/settings. Would I want to edit in 4k/5k, or create an HD timeline (same framerate) and simply resize the footage to fit the HD format? I have a red rocket card, and see that it speeds up preview and encoding while using redcineX, but I have not seen any increased productivity while exporting from Premiere CS6.
Can anyone shed some light? Is there a timeline sequence that works best/most efficient? Or is the fastest workflow to use redcinex with red rocket, encode the red footage into something like PRORES? I'd like to stick with the red footage if I can, but noticed 45+ min renders of 1-2 min red 5k clip, simple cuts without any post.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I'm using cs6 and finding that with a 5K timeline you can't open the 'reference monitor' for looking at the scopes, as the interactivity is non existent.
On cs6 it takes a couple of seconds to update the picture after a slider move on a color corrector, for example. ( with scopes on )
Not sure if this is the case with newer CC versions on a 5K sequence.

I agree with your observation on RR not helping much. If you are using lots of stabilizers or fancy color corrections, the system is rather sluggish because of the effects used, not the decoder for r3d.
The people who are saying they fly through projects with 5K footage are perhaps on a HD sequence/timeline and doing only simple color corrections. I'm guessing here.
I've had it spend more than 10 hours to render a single clip of 20 seconds. Lots of effects on it ; stabilize/twixtor/tonemap/noise_reduction. Totally choked on it. 5K timeline with UHD output.
My machine is a 6 core Sandbridge E with 32Gig memory.

This should be a good thread.

Les, thanks for the input. My guess is that if you're putting your footage through additional effects, it will choke weather you have the card or not, and with 5k image 24 fps, you're looking at a whole lot of processing. I'm working on simple edit but want to keep the best resolution possible for review, and have not been able to find any suggested sequence setting / export.
