  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

what is the maximum wattage load?

I've tried searching this all over... Hopefully a RED official or super expert of the universe can chime in :sifone:

What is the maximum power load for Dragon in watts?
As in, how many WATTS is the maximum Epic Dragon can demand to feast on? :devil:
i.e. what is the maximum burst draw needed (electrical blood thirst)?

I have no idea and I'm trying to get an idea on power needs for a project.
perhaps i'm over thinking things

I know I can can convert Wh to Watts:
watts = watt-hours / hours

37Wh redvolt lasts about 30 mins

so

74watts = 37Wh / .5 hrs

but thats more of an average...

...and I've read on reduser of folks using batteries w/ 50 watt max power draws running Dragons w/ no issue...

...which super confuses me!!! :confused5:

Hi Alexandre,
....Swit just wrote me back and told me they are in fact a 50 watt max output (website mistake), this is the Swit S-8082S 95wh that you guys are using, correct?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1130057-REG/swit_s_8082s_95wh_v_mount_battery.html

I believe reading somewhere that the power draw for the Dragon and Weapon are around 70 watts. If so, could this cause potential problems at 50 watt max output?

Hi Gene,

Yes it's this one, and for aircraft it's perfect :)

For max outpout I didn't know how much power the Dragon need to power up.

Alex

On a side note;

Does the Epic use more power at higher frames rates?

What about 6K FF 23.98 at 5:1?

Does compression ratio have a tangible impact on power draw?

What about power draw needed to boot?

Thanks for your patience and I appreciate any helpful info! :thumbsup:

It's a computer so its power draw varies with what you're doing with it.

The user manual says it can take 11.5 - 17v DC and can draw a maximum current of 12 amps...So lets assume worst case scenario 17volt x 12amp = 204w peak.
At idle it would be much less obviously but this varies on accessories attached.
How much extra 'stuff' are you powering? 5" screen or 7" screen?

The only true test would be for you to cut a power cable (say a cheap D-tap one) and throw your multi-meter in series with the power source to read the current.

Yes your redcode setting and frame size would have some effect as the workload on the brain would vary.

puzzling, thanks for finding that Adam.
Silly me read the DSMC power operation manual and I was searching for "watt".

The highest power output load I found for Bats (an IDX model) was 120 watts @ 14.8v

Also The RED A/C adaptor has a max output of 150 watts.

But I suspect those ratings are for sustained output and not peak power spikes.

Either way, I'm inclined to think bats rated at 12 amps, like the IDX model, may prove more reliable.
