What is the ISO rating for the Scarlet?
and how is it comparatively to other 2/3" cameras?

thanks,
William

We can expect it to have a similar noise floor to the S35 M-X, which is tested to be something like 800 ASA (Though officially rated lower, the real performance is what matters). Basically, at that speed there's zero noise. However, going above that, I am guessing the 2/3" noise pattern would be more distracting than the S35 thanks to the smaller sensor. The M-X seems to get away with workable noise at 2000 ASA according to some tests, so I am guessing 2/3" will be fine at 1200 ASA or so.

All this is just blind speculation and I might be proven totally wrong by the time Scarlet hits retail.

Sony's new FW-800 Cine Alta 2.3" camera is rated at 800 iso, so somthing in that range is certainly possible.

I don't really see it having ND's built in, I guess because you shouldn't think of the scarlet like a video camera. You can always turn down/up the ISO. But I would suggest investing in ND filters and matte box.

I was wondering because a cinematographer friend of mine told me that he read the scarlet basically wasn't going to be able to handle low light levels as well as an EX1...so I figured I would ask and see what you guys thought.

and I am definitely going to try and get a matte box...

Thanks,
William

And he's basing that on his intimate knowledge of the Scarlet sensor and electronics, or just making a wild guess? (Oh, and by the way, we don't do a single ISO - we do a range of suitable ISOs)

ex1... half inch cmos sensor, prosumer camera. scarlet... 2/3 inch up to S35 size sensor, cinema class camera, with a high possibility of matching or surpassing the current m-x sensor in optimal ISO ranges... why even make the comparison? cause they are in the same price range?

A quite ridiculous claim. Ask him where he read that.

And you did well. To think there are people who would believe him and assume the same...

It does get tedious after a while. The camera lines will prove their worth soon enough. The EX series are horrible in lowlight. There is nothing to push. This where RED comes into its own.

To the naysayers - Yawnarama City...wait and see. I will have an opinon when i see it. But I have belief to sustain until then. Thats an educated belief not blind fan boy belief.
