  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is the difference between an Epic-M and an Epic-X?

It's worth remembering the original Stage 2's (also confusingly called Epic-X) were going to be slightly higher frame rate capable than the Stage 3's. Has this gone away?

No. Stage 2 and Stage 3 provide the same camera (Epic-X) but with slightly different accessory packages and the difference that Stage 2 offers earlier delivery and the ability to keep the Red One. Stage 3 allows for trade-in of the R1 and a concommitantly lower price for Epic-X, reflecting the loss of the R1 to the owner.

Also, the Epic-X designation reflects the fact that they contain pick-of-the-litter sensors, available only to R1 owners, a thank-you from Red to the early believers. There is no frame rate difference between Epic-X and the generic Epic camera. Unfortunately, the waters were muddied on the Epic-X designation when the Scarlet S35 model was kicked upstairs to Epic territory.

This is the element I think may be "Subject to change..."

I don't mind, though that the other sensors become Epic S

Ah yes. My memory was off - the Dec 2008 announcement was for lower compression Redcode 250 (not higher framerate) for Mysterium-X "Select" sensors for Stage 2 and 3, compared with Redcode 225 for non-early adopters.

Everything subject to change of course!!

Well, I certainly hope that Stage 3 buyers will not lose their pick-of-the-litter sensor status, as that is where I am headed. Otherwise, I may have been inclined to go Stage 2. In my market, there is no other R1 competition, so the delay of a few months to recieve the Epic-X amounts to little more than Red-Fanboy-ism, and I have no desire to hold on to a 1st gen R1. If I opt for a second camera, I prefer to have some variety of Scarlet (or Epic-S or whatever Scarlet S35 becomes known as).

I'm definitely going to be Stage 3. . . but I certainly would like to see it come out soon.

If we are to believe Jim, and I do, the manufacturing ramp-up to full capacity for the Epic generation will be relatively short, as will the release of the Scarlet line.

I think one of the main reasons for the overwhelming response to the Stage 2 offer is the fear by many that manufacturing ramp up will be similar to that of the R1. IMHO, I believe the slow roll-out of the previous generation will be a relative non-issue this time around. The early R1 adopters also cleaned up on rentals, and the method of release for the Epic generation is designed, I believe, to keep the early adoption gold rush to a minimum, leveling the playing field for Stage 2 and Stage 3 adopters.

That said, I sure would like to see my number come up in March-April. Fingers crossed...

Excuse my ignorance, but things keep changing. What stage or when will non red1 owners be able to purchase or at least sign up for an Epic and will it be an epic x. Could someone point me to the latest cameras that are being developed. I've read so much about scarlet scarletS35 Epic X, M, L. Its all so confusing.. I have searched and I keep getting old info. Thank you

Well, it IS confusing, but this info has yet to be laid out.

Wait! I think I see another package in the corner behind the tree...Nope just a Red Rider BB gun. Shit! I was hoping for more details all-around for Christmas from Santa Jannard, but those wishes melted with the Christmas Day snowfall :-( Just like my annual wishlist line item for a go-cart\mini-bike when Iwas a kid. Oh well, my birthday is coming up in February and I promise to my breath until I turn blue, if it doesn't arrive by then!

I think te confusion it will generate will be prohibitive for "different" Epic-Xs hitting the market.
Actually I am not overly happy for the renaming of Scarlet, as that will confuse renters...(I don't minde the extra features on Scarlet S35 in any way. I just would have preferred that different cams with diferent capacities had different names. Maybe a product-number would help?)

You are looking at Stage 4 and it is called Epic S35. Same as Epic-X but doesn't come with any free modules.

Has this gotten confirmation recently?

I was of the understanding that what would be for sale in the RED Store eight months from now would be only the Epic-S and the Epic-X. Nothing simply called an "Epic" or "Epic S35" which falls somewhere between the two. And no "Epic-X" which offers additional framerates/bitrates as a reward via Stage 2 to RED ONE buyers.

Just one Epic-S representing the "low end" of the Epic range.

And one Epic-X representing the "high end" of the Epic range.

Right, forgot the name changes are for the Epic line too.

Gotta disagree w U there. I think that the various brains like Arri SR 1 2 3 HS etc. didnt confuse anyone knowledgeable. The less emp on a separate camera will keep RED from falling into the Sony/Panasonic trap of disabling cheap cameras so as to sell high end cameras. Better for all of us if all the modules brains etc are compatible in a single system.
