  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will it be possible to record a 3K image with the Scarlet and downconvert it directly from the camera while downloading the footage via firewire or USB 2 to a computer that can handle 1080p footage?

the primary red format is RAW . It is not certain if it will shoot RGB . Raw requires a lot more procssesing than DV or even HDV . The down conversion is done in software on the machine ( check out the workflow section on the red website ) . Raw as opposed to RGB allows perameters of the footage to be changed in post . It is the same as Raw shooting on a DSLR . Aperture , exposure, White balance etc can all be changed in post. The camera records "what the lens sees" and lets you adjust the data later in post. RGB is more of a fixed image like a JPEG or Bitmap . exposure and white balance are pre determined by the camera . On the PC or Mac side it seems like an upgrade will be in order to edit said footage . 100MB per sec is quite an ask even for an 8 core mac pro . bare in mind it is almost 3 times the current data rate of the red one (36mb I think I read somewhere) and double something like DVCPRO50 ...

You could of course use the suite of apps to down convert the footage to 1080 before you edit . also there is some exciting stuff happening with cineform's latest software . they will no doubt add support for the red format into Adobe Premiere . this will all have to be sorted before Scarlet ships as majority still work on PCs as opposed to Mac ...

Actually I was wondering the same...

Why record in RGB when we have been told during 2 years RAW is the way to go?

Space on the Cards ? RGB does not even use a quarter of the filesize that RAW does

Drive speed is more of the issue when you get into those data rates. You'll need drives with high sustained data rates. Common HD uncompressed rates are in the neighborhood of 200 MBps and the Mac Pros are handling that fine if you have the right storage.

It does make sense to be able to shoot compressed as well ... Great for when you need longer record times . Shoot raw for work and serious projects , and shoot RGB when I dunno , filming your kids playing soccer

I recon a Raid 5 setup will do the trick ... there are a few manufacturers making a 1TB external raid box ... and yeah the 8 core mac or the new intel Skulltrail setup will be ok for processing , but most of the guys who are looking to buy this camera probably have at best core2 duo's or if they are lucky a core2 Quad ...

Is like in the DSLRs, you have RAW and JPEG. Is always good to have options.
