So i am looking for a little discussion on why 120hz TVs look like crap.

I understand the idea of 60hz refresh rate is what we mostly shoot with, but I saw Fire Down Below the other day and it looked a damn novella or like General Hospital. Everything looked plastic. Especially the faces in close up.

To me they seem to be a gimmick. But then again if you watching 3D movies I'd get they 120hz.

I am looking for a good explanation on this.

I get that. I do. But what I am asking is why do people like it? I ask people who have them and they just say well look at it. It's look so brand new.

I am at loss as to why it's any good.

For cinema and most tv it looks like balls and should never be on. But if you are big into sports, this is a really cool feature. Thats it in my opinion.

I believe though that on samsung tvs that when you turn off the auto motion plus filters it auto drops the tv back down to 60hz.

My suspicion is that the average viewer doesn't notice it, I mean most people don't even recognise that the picture is the wrong aspect ratio.

Thats my point. 95% of TV is not sports or something that needs that BS. So why have it?

Films look like crap on it.

Hollywood producers and executives say the same about movie goers being too dumb. Look we all know when something looks bad. Not all will notice the aspect ratio. But my favorite moment is when I watch a show on a supposed HD channel and the picture is 4:3.

man i know lots of people that barely even watch tv if its not sports. Its cool if you are into it. if not just leave it off. options are good.

Ever been forced to watch The Godfather on a 120hz and the person who owns the TV refuses to turn it off? Yeah..... it hurts in many ways.

ive yet to be "forced" to watch anything on it. im sorry man, that must have been terrible. i feel for you. you should have switched it off during their first piss break :)

I saw "Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back" in 120hz at a Costco once. I actually thought it, unlike many other examples I've seen before, looked quite cool. Except for the fact that any VFX stood out awkwardly, I didn't see a problem with it. Since then I've seen many awful 120hz examples so it seems to be specific to a few factors:

1. The quality of the 120hz television.
2. The content being displayed.
3. The personal preference of the viewer.

My main gripe with 120hz televisions is that the processing is still messed up on many televisons to this day. I recently went to buy a new TV to replace my family's yellowing 60" Sony and I saw the main selection of LG, Vizio, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, and Sharp. Out of all of them, the only brand that had consistent processing was Panasonic. It's unfortunate that all I could find from Panasonic at the local stores were 50" and below because the others either had frequent movement slowdown, awkward speed ramping, heavy aliasing, and, surprisingly, general fuzziness only on their 120hz modes. If I were in the market for a 3D television, I'd sit it out and wait for the next generation or go super high-end.

It's awful. I don't go over to the house of guys who design TVs and smear my excrement on their favourite paintings. I'm not sure why they're doing it to me!

But what I am asking is why do people like it?

They don't. They are just told that it's awesome and they follow. I still can't believe they tout this shit as a "feature"...
