I am wondering what is the current RED policy about used cameras (epic scarlet):

1- transfer of ownership fee ? (does that include and camera check at all ? or just a record transfer )

2- red armor warranty extension (is it possible to apply at the time of ownership transfer ?

3- any other services related to camera check etc...?

thanks

Dont' know for sure but I'll try to answer your questions.

1) I believe it is $750 and includes an inspection.
2) I believe red armor can only be purchased when a camera is brand new when you make the original order. I believe you can not buy this at any other time, and its not transferrable.
3) I can't even guess at this, but not to my knowledge.

1.) $750 for ownership transfer + $100 to give the camera a once over and a 90day warranty. (So it's $850 total)
2.) NO CHANCE.
3.) No... You get a "Thanks for choosing RED!" email, though.

Basically if you're buying used, it better be at least $2k cheaper than new prices (Sub-$6k for Scarlet, Sub $17k for Epic), otherwise you're getting boned. The year warranty alone is worth $1000 more than a privately sold used camera's complete lack of warranty and the transfer fee doesn't include shipping back to red, and then shipping from red to your door.... so I'd even say $2k off of retail isn't really enough to make it worthwhile. Expect $5k used Scarlet brains and $1000 R1mxs soon (of course, at those prices, people will just as soon keep them).

Thanks Mike ,
i typically don't buy anything used if not at least 35% less than the price as new ...

is pretty amazing seeing already some posts of people selling used scarlets for basically less than 1K discount ...

i would buy a used scarlet for a penny more than 5K (brain) ...

so for recap , paying 850 (assuming that camera does not repair ) i should have a checked (battle tested) and 3 months warranty .
am i correct

thanks

one more question :
if a camera still have more than 3 months left on original warranty , will that be preserved after the ownership transfer ?

thanks

Yes, $850 gets the camera put in your name, re-evaluated to make sure it's okay (battle-tested), and 90 days worth of warranty.

Unfortunately, NO warranties are transferable... Even if someone has 3 years of RED armour left on the camera you're about to buy from them, it gets nulled/voided when you do the ownership transfer. I know, it's lame. Better bet would be to keep it under the original owner's name and if any problems arise, go through him/her to get it handled under their original warranty. That said, I wouldn't recommend you do that unless you know the seller personally (and know they won't screw you over if shit hit the fan.) Plus, I'm not sure if RED would be too happy about that if they found out... Legally, they could probably tell you and the original owner to screw yourselves.

One useful tip that I've seen used with high value business purchases; the camera (or whatever) is bought by a corporation, or subsidiary formed just for that purpose. When the time comes to sell the camera, you don't just sell the camera, you transfer ownership of the company. Companies are people too, and so legally the camera never changes ownership; it remains owned by the same company. No transfer fee, no effect on warranty, extended or otherwise :-)

California charges $800 annually to incorporate an LLC. Plus the reporting requirements. Wouldn't be cost effective.

Is red armor really worth it? Does anyone really use it? Or do the Scarlets regularly have warranty issues that can't be seen in the first 90 days (BT) / 1 year (new)?

how about the standard 1 year warranty ? does that one gets transferred to the new owner ?

thansk

you also take over any liabilities the company has, not worth it trying to save 2k on transferring a camera.
