  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is bitrate at Scarlet and Epic and RED ONE?

REDCODE is a variable bit rate wavelet codec.

I can't say with absolute empirical evidence, but I believe the numbers following the word REDCODE indicate the average data rate in MB/s.

e.g., REDCODE 42 is roughly 42 MB/s. This is not a constant bit rate.

I'm not sure what the absolute range of bit rates for the Scarlet, Epic and R1 are, but they are largely, if not entirely, determined by several factors, whose various combinations result in a wide range of values. The factors include resolution (5k, 4k, 3k, 2k); frame aspect ratio (16:9, 2:1, ANA); compression level (RC 28, RC36, RC42, etc.); frame-per-second rate (24-250 [- and +]); scenic detail; audio tracks. Am I missing any factors?

You can see these various bit rates reflected in whether they may or may not be used with various combinations of the factors on various forms of media (8GB CF, 16GB CF, Red Raid, SSD) as you can see in the media chart in the operating manual.

There are bitrate calculators for RED all over the internet and the app store.
