just wondering what it was shot on, it looks good and alot of other netflix stuff has been shot on red cause they want 4k content. its 2:35 and looks possibly red with a vintage anamorphic zoom.

I am wondering the same thing. I was watching out for signs of it being shot on Anamorphic but the flares and edges dont seem to indicate they used anamorphic glass. I am thinking it's probably shot with spherical lenses and cropped for 2:35.

My guess is that they are using Alexa and some type of diffusion filter like BPM or SFX (based on some flaring from soft sources like a window). My reasoning that they might be on Alexa is just based on eye and also in the scenes where they are on a film set, their prop cameras are Alexa's with zooms...so I figure it's more cost effective for them to just put their second camera in as the prop camera in these scenes. In episode 5, it shows an Alexa and zoom lens that kinda looks like the Cooke 25-250 or something similar to the Cooke vintage zooms.

I could just be flat out wrong but these are just my guesses.

haha, i was wondering the same thing, i looked at my wife and was wow, um, i wonder why this is shot 2:35 and she said who cares.
but the corners and lines look so clean and straight i figured they just cropped it in post and shot spherical.
id love to know too!

Pretty sure they shot on the new Varicam. I don't think Netflix shows can shoot on Alexa due to acquisition spec requirements, but not positive.

It looked spherical cropped to me...apparently on "super light lenses." Leica's perhaps? And surely some zooms in there. Definitely think they did good work with shot design, lensing (and filtration?), and final color.

Overall, I really enjoyed the season, not just thematically and content-wise, but also that something like this could get made for "television." I guess there have been a few episodic series as of late that have been raising the bar out there, but I'm still hoping that the shot callers of the television world can see that something like this can work and play well for audiences that are rather accustomed to the language of the small screen.

Varicam it is folks. I emailed Mark Schwartzbard the DP and he said the following:

Camera was the Panasonic Varicam 35. Lenses were a mix of Cooke Panchro series II/III and Zeiss Superspeed primes, Cooke 18-100, Angenieux 25-250 HR, and Angenieux Optimo 15-40 for steadicam.

best,

mark

oh wow, nice one. interesting. cool he went old school on the lenses too.
varicam is doing a hard push for dps to use their camera.
i wonder of he shot in 2:35 or 16x9 and cropped in post, and i wonder why they went for that, especially if it might be on regular tv one day.

Okay guys you are amazing, and this is why I love this community.

The image of Master of None is nothing but incredible. It has a vintage feel to it.

And actually there is a shot where you can see a Varicam 35 ! It's at the begining of Season 2 Episode 10 - when they a re filming the "BFFs" episode. When Dev gets out of the ramen shop there is a Varicam sitting on a tripod.

Just wanted to share this with you guys ;)

Thanks to all !
