  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is ABSOLUTLY minimum money for buy EPIC and shoot?

Hope Red realizes this discrepancy and prices Scarlet S35 accordingly. I believe they will.... if R1 sensor upgrade alone costs $6000, I don't see Scarlet S35 costing only $7000.

This may be the first time ever that clients have asked a company to price is product higher. well done Jim , crating people that care abou the company as much as the product :P

1. Body
2. Storage Unit - CF is cheapest
3. Nikon Mount
4. LCD
5. Tripod base if none included
6. Nikon 18-200 lens
7. Batteries

You are set. This is the same strategy to get a RED One for under $21,000. This is what you need to use the camera bare minimum, if you need other things then that's on you, it's all just a case-by-case basis.

You'll obviously need a tripod and other stuff but that shouldn't factor in to any RED camera budget, that's something you should already have, otherwise you're just looking for any excuse to say that the RED "really" costs $50,000.

Good luck on your Epic purchase, I wish I could get one but the Scarlet is a better fit for me.

But the sensor is the expensive part. If the M-X upgrade is close to $6000, it stands to reason that the S35 brain costs $7000, since it's essentially the same sensor in a box, no? That's what the modular concept does. It lets us upgrade just the sensor box, keeping the other electronics intact.

The MX upgrade cost $6000 today. Right now the chip is new, and of limited quantity with a high demand. By the time Scarlet S35 is available that will change, and you should expect the R1MX upgrade to cost less.

...But then again, my theory is that ALOT of production companies will just buy their own scarlets and subrent lenses (unless they just buy their own kit) then you can say goodbye to rentals in this regard :/

Camera rentals seem to have been a decent business since the
1950-1960's when the studios sold off their camera departments.

But seems the rental market will be different now...
unless someone comes out with a camera that is vastly superior
in image quality to anything we've seen that comes w/ sky-high cost.

Thanks,
Yes Scarlet S35 is better way but it would be cool to see Epic in the nearest half a year and Scarlet S35 could be much far from Epic in time so I will buy Scarlet S35 if it will be released for example untill the end 2010 but if we will told that Scarlet S35 will be released in 2011 I think it would be better to loan about 15K and buy Epic in 2010 in the absolutely minimum module. And I think maybe it would be better to buy RED ONE if it will not be possiple to buy Epic or ScarletS35 untill end of 2010 and then change RED ONE for Epic according to Stage 3.

Don't you have to have bought your RED One before 29 October 2009 to qualify for the Stages?

Ups:) So I see I can't buy now RED ONE and change it for Epic:) So I have only one choise is to wait Scarlet S35 and hope it will in this 2010.

Hopefully we will get an update at RED Day Las Vegas during NAB.

I would imagine that such a request is in equal parts to protect the investment one is planning to make in Epic. ie; exclusivity for small/indie rental business.

I've got to believe that with Red able to apply the brain power to create the waves in filmmaking they have with Red One, they probably are able to come up with a product marketing strategy that makes them a tidey profit without our need for concern. ;)

unless you shoot alot of highspeed (I NEVER do... the highest i ever go is 48fps)
then the cheaper scarlet is your best bet.

I imagine alot of productions will lean towards renting a scarlet package because A. it will be a cheaper rental.. and B. they wont need to shoot the extra frame rates..

But then again, my theory is that ALOT of production companies will just buy their own scarlets and subrent lenses (unless they just buy their own kit)

I really can't see much of a serious rental market for S35. It seems perfectly targeted towards indie shooters owner/operators (such as myself) and b-camera on larger scale Epic shoots. Many music video & commercial shoots will go with Epic (either by hiring an owner/operator, or rental) as short form projects like this will always want to be using the highest "cache" product. And music videos & commercials do tons of overcranked work. Epic should still have a decent rental market not too different from the current R1 market for owner/operators. But indie/S35 owners should be thinking about needing to get shooting gigs to pay for the kit.

Work on your reels!

my two cents
