  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What HDMI to DVI cable?

What you need:

Any standard HDMI (male) to DVI (male) cable in your desired length. ( monoprice.com , sewelldirect.com , bluejeanscable.com )

A signal booster or or amplified cable should be used for cables longer than 15~20ft.

A prayer that your computer monitor will support the incoming video signal, not all will digest the signal / resolution from the RED's HDMI port.

No, apple monitors doesn't work for sure. Only hd-sdi to dvi through blackmagic hd-link or similiar aja converter

Not sure why people say this. I am using an Apple Cinema Display 30" right now for full-screen monitoring with Red.

Due to the 1280x800 resolution you don't see the full menus, but for non-menu monitoring it works great. I'm using an HDMI-DVI cable.

I used a 50' HDMI cable with a HDMI to DVI adapter connected to my Dell 2405 (the client monitor) on a shoot. Had no booster on it. Worked great.

One thing though, on one of the sets there was a 40-50' HDTV. Patched the 50' HDMI cable in to the TV's HDMI port and it seemed to cause the camera to freeze up. Also had booting issues. Disconnected and camera worked fine again.

Oh thats great! Thanks. What brand of hdmi to DVI cable are you using? (is there a link you can send me to?)

Hi Hunter,

Any of the HDMI to DVI cables (male to male) made by gefen inc. (800-545-6900) should work. Their website is gefen.com

Let us know if you achieve success with the apple 30 inch cinema display

The HDTV could have been placing too much draw on the HDMI port. Use a booster or amplified cable. There's more reasons than simply getting the signal from point A to point B. This isn't SDI, composite video, etc.. I've done enough AV installs and troubleshooting with HDMI and DVI. It's amazing how many displays, projectors, disc players, etc.. end up with damaged ports because of improper line loads and conditions. Most scalers and quality switches will have individually amplified outputs or voltage / signal boosting built-in. But most common devices and display hardware doesn't.

I am very interested, but my 30" has a male DVI input, and I can't find a male-HDMI/female-DVI.
I am very curios as to what HDMI-DVI cable you are using.
Also the 30" normally needs dual DVI to work.

Please proove me wrong:detective2:

Didn't want to be misleading or anything.

I tried to hook up 23" acd through simple hana adapter. It just blinked twice and nothing. Then i dug forums a little, and found other users are having the same issue.

Although i just tested 30" acd, and it works well.

So no for 23", yes for 30"

weird, I bought a signal booster and the ONLY way I can get it to work on a 50foot HDMI cable is using a HDMI splitter and running 2 screens off the cmaera, one DELL 24inch LCD on a 10foot HDMI cable and one DELL 22inch LCD on the 50foot signal boosed cable. I can't get the signal booster to work on a single 50foot cable off the camera...ideas??

WHen I MUST have a long run I am now forced to use the HDSDI out.....that sucks because I can't see menu on it....and it's a small screen in the center of the 22in LCD because of resolution output from the HDLink box....

gotta be some weird current draw or Voltage level issue is my guess....

RED: Please sell or point us all to a working 50foot HDMI solution that you KNOW works...I feel like I just wasted $$ on a solution that does not really work the way it should...

Take a look at these cable solutions:

50ft HDMI with built-in regulator and booster. 5V DC power supply which can be used optionally if needed:

Gefen SuperBooster Cables:

HDMI fiber optic:

As far as the RED One is concerned, I'm kinda flying blind though -- still waiting on my own camera and haven't had a chance to put other peoples' cameras through the HDMI tests. Sounds like your HDMI problem is indeed a voltage regulation problem. What booster are you using?
