For a while I've wondered what RED does with the trade in cameras when we upgrade. I have this vision of a dimly lit sad room with a bunch of veteran cameras sitting on shelves wasting away. The stories they could tell (have told)..

Surely that's not the case. Are any of the parts reused on the upgrades? I just hate to think that my amazing epic dragon will not have any life after I trade it in.

In the past RED has donated trade in cameras to film schools and educational facilities. Not sure if that's still the case but they have done it in the past.

I am accepting charitable contributions as well...At least RED cameras.

Thank you very much

A rumor (just started by me '-) has it they are being shipped to the Space station to create a huge sensor array with the Low Light OLPF to shoot in the dark regions of space in hopes of finding black holes and/or dark matter.

They might just do what they did with the redone MX battle tested. Sell them for a few grand and have them gone by the end of the day.

Only a guess, but I imagine there were a fair amount of Scarlet MX trade ins for the Epic MX upgrade. Its the only camera body that could be sitting on shelves at Red in numbers. Battle tested Scarlets for $2.5K would sell out quickly, but its not likely as that could possibly eat into Raven sales now. With all that said, Red doesn't strike me as the type of company to just let cameras rot on shelves. They very likely could have already donated them to schools. Whatever they did with those trade ins, they planned for it ahead of time and I don't think we'll see them for sale.

I wouldn't be opposed to a program allowing me to buy back my camera after the upgrade or something like that. But maybe after I get a weapon I won't want the old camera as much.

Isn't parts of the camera and sensor that you trade in used for replacements in faulty cameras? Otherwise what a waste of good tech.

Having upgraded from Scarlet X to Epic X to Epic Dragon I wonder if there are any parts that made it from my original Scarlet X into my current dragon.

You have qued in to why buying a upgraded can opposed to new might have more than the hours listed, but who knows...

From what I just gathered, trade-ins from Epic Dragon to Weapon Dragon actually take your old sensor and put it in the new Weapon body. This whole time I though it was a full swap for Epic Dragon to Weapon Dragon, no sensor swapping.

I'm really curious too...

Ok, see? 'Cause now I really want to know... Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? Brent? Jarred? Jim?

The way it was explained to me was that they re-use most of your camera, replacing key components for the upgrade. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling the Epic Dragon in my hand still has a lot of parts from my original Scarlet MX in it...

I feel pretty certain my Scarlet Dragon became an entirely new Epic Dragon. Although it didn't happen to me, if there's sensor damage etc I'm pretty sure you have to pay for the repair and then pay for the upgrade.

I think it's gonna be a battle tested sale... Just hope I hear about it right when it happens. I remember last time Jarred announced it on Facebook and by the time I found out they were all gone... :(
