  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

what follow focus do you use?

O'Connor FF1

Arri FF4. Simplest to use. Love the action. Most rentable. Your AC's will be thankful.

This question should really be, what does your 1st Ac prefer. They are the guys and galls that make their living with the things, and at least mine gets what he wants to do the job the best he can. In my experience, arri and chrosziel, have the least amount of backlash when adjusted properly, and so that is what I give my Acs. It's really up to them.

As an AC, the answer is all of them :)

I'll use whatever I'm given, but my preference is the Preston FIZ 3 or F/I for handheld/steadicam/tight quarters and Arri FF4 for dolly/sticks. I have an OFocus DM for autofocus lenses, but would prefer gears and a Preston F/I or Bartech because you can set end stops and spread out the focus scales.

I think I'm gonna buy Edelkrone because I'm under a budget. But man, a lot of you guys used O connor. My second question for you guys is how important is a follow focus? why can't you just focus by hand?

A good follow focus is really important when you're using cinema glass. Your focus throw is close to 360* and when you need to crank from one end to the other, having a little knob is much better than trying to grab those gears and potentially shifting the camera around.

Most of us also have ACs because you're looking for different things when operating vs pulling focus.

Personally, as an AC, I've come to really like the OConnor FF1 more so than the Arri FF4/5.
