Had a had a 25 minute interview shoot yesterday.
Put fan on Manual.
Can`t be positive but I set my fan Standby to 35% and recording to 30% or maybe less.
The client was late on set so I powered down camera.
then powered up,
began shoot 9 minutes in hair dryer blasting from my scarlet.
To the extent the client , says "think you need a new camera there"
really embarrassing ,my audio guy was on a second system with a lav.
I was on a shotgun. I thought I would be alright but those particular sections are unusable .
It happened again 3 more times in the space of 20 minutes.

When I looked at my settings again after the interview , it appeared my settings had reverted to
standby 70% recording 30%.
The room was air-conditioned, warm ish but not much.

Should I have set the fans to Auto and done 35% Record 30 %
Latest firmware

thanks

My understanding is that 35% is as low as you should manually set the fan for RECORDING. As far as Stand-by mode, hell, I'd let 'er go full tilt, batteries permitting. Your def asking for grief with a ceiling set manually at 35% stand-by...
w-a-a-a-y too low. But I guess you know THAT now.

BTW, the Temp display in the viewfinder DOES change color (Grn/orange/Red I believe) as the internal heat heads up to the (82 degree C?) auto shut-off, so if you keep an eye on that display/temps you will get some warning things are starting to bake...

Yup, at 72C the temp display turns yellow, 74 it goes orange, at 75C the fan overrides to 100%, 76C the display turns red, at 77C it stops recording.

I tried testing it on Scarlet and I can get about 7 minutes of recording with the temperature raising from 35C—>72C when running at 25% fan speed and 13 minutes when running at 35% @ 4K HD. Both times I let the camera cool down to about 35C by running the fans at 100% for about 5 minutes. I haven't tried recording at 40% since by that point the fan is a bit more noticible than ideal, but I bet you could get close to 15 minutes or so.

Definitely let the camera cool all the way down during breaks, since it's your best chance at getting a complete take without any interruptions from Scarlet. Leaving the standby at 35% only makes long takes more difficult..

The problem with this particular shoot , is the situation was very reverend and intimate. we were all tip toeing around.
I could not even stop the camera to go into the settings as that would have stated the fans.
I was just wondering was there a way to shoot continuously for half an hour with out the fans blowing .

thanks for your responses

I use 100% standby 35% Record. If silent standby mode is necessary than maybe the Scarlet and Epic are the wrong camera for that particular job. I would consider a different cam if it was my shoot...subrent an f3 or simular.

Yes I think for future jobs like this one, I would definitely look for an alternative camera, too bad
as the footage I got was really beautiful .

I find that at 40% the sound level is actually quite acceptable (unless you place mike very close to the camera). When recording at 3k, at least, temp seems to stabilize at around 65C for this setting. I used 50-60% idle speed which is cleary audible in a quiet room but not offensivly so. This level cools the camera down fairly slowly though.

sound falls off at the square of the distance, so if moving the camera back just a two or three feet is an option, that will make a difference. I was just doing audio on a shoot a few weeks ago. Scarlet was set to I think 30 or 33% in recording mode. Lavs and boom mics were about 15 feet from the camera. Could not hear the fans when recording.

You can also build a sound dampening barrier between the lens and the fans - toss a sound blanket or two on the floor, cut a hole for the lens in a piece of duv and hang it on a gobo arm. Every bit helps.

Simon,

Your situation was a carbon copy of mine, without the client's sarcasm. Yet I agree, embarrassing. I am imagining you were using the Redvolts on the side handle. See my other post on this issue:http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?76517-Everything-I-Hate-About-My-Scarlet!!!/page2.

In terms of fan, my settings are 75% on stand-by and 25% when shooting.

Thanks Antonio,
No I was using V-Mount batteries, but as I am reading Voltage as opposed to % an added bit of nervousness ,
75% & 25% shooting , I will do a few test.
Next time as other posters have said , I will definitely bring my full Lens set and try and move back from the talent + lav.

all a learning experience, which is what it should be .

Perhaps Wooden Camera can fashion a $600 aluminum ice cube tray we can mount on our rails right in front of the air intake vents. Maybe I can have dry ice delivered to shoots with really high end clients, and they would be awed by the liquid smoke flowing through my Scarlet, as it hums away in a nearly silent, comfortable chill.

Same problem here. Nothing like this the last 5 years shooting with my RedOnes.

Red Team, we need an update/solution... really.
