  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What exact frame rate are you shooting at?

Hi,

I just wanted t know if its the norm to now generally shoot at 23.98 or are we still shooting in whole numbers and slowing down ever so slightly in post.

I would think with hd vtrs involved and live downconversions possible, 23.98 would fit best.

But with red?? Does it really make a difference?

thanks,

tom

23.976, ALWAYS.

Of course if you don't need to sync audio, then it might not be such an issue.

BTW, to my understanding, even though the red says 23.98 on its display, its actually doing 23.976.

this is a lil Pet peeve of mine.

is shooting at 24fps not an issue when out putting to DVD?

output of true 24fps to dvd could end up being problematic (dont believe this is even possible).
Better yet to do it a 23.976 and when you downconvert and do pulldown you will endup with 29.97 fps footage, which is ideal for dvd.
remeber 24fps si to 30 fps what 23.976 is to 29.97.

Better yet to not do the pulldown at all and encode a 23.98 M2V, which every DVD player will add pulldown to on playback.

This also has the advantage that the cadence from the DVD player will be consistent and the newest (and not so newtest) displays out there will remove the pulldown from you footage and it will endup looking like true 24fps.

I made the mistake of shooting 24f on the canon XL H1 HDV camera and had to create a NTSC DVD to play it smoothly, which is not ideal cause im in PAL land.

I would love to shoot my short films at 23.97, but im not sure how to encode it to a pal DVD?
