  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

Jim, you gave me a Red One, that was more than I could ask for. You keep trucking on and I'll be here watching and clapping. No rush. We have an amazing piece of equipment in our hands. I could wait until 2012 but not a day longer

Disappointing to hear, but you guys will know when the time is right. This will just allow many of us to collect more funds.

Appreciate, as always, the honesty. I was upset at first, to be honest (wanted to shoot a film during early fall with the camera) but am thinking even now that I might be able to get ahold of a R1 which would be even sweeter.

As long as I eventually get one, I will be okay with some delay. =]

Thanks for the update, Jim.

As much as I look forward to the Epic, I have to agee that it is a prudent decision to make. I managed to get a PL mount bolted to Canon 50D - an early substitution of the real DSMC, but together with Red One they will get me by. I can shoot images that look stunning now.

Your team worked very hard to get us where we are today and it is good time to have a breather, recharge, and come out even stronger when things improve. Please keep us updated as you have in the past.

You have my full support.

Making such decision must be somewhat difficult. The demand of the market has gone down and you adapt accordingly. Does this mean the competitors will also gain some extra time to reach the technical advantage RED has at the moment?

Something different, I'm just curious, what made RED to change the its plans from the original Scarlet/Epic approach to the modular system. In my eyes it was a great move, and it would just be interesting to know how the design process managed to take such a new direction. After all, we all understand this is not what companies usually do. For instance, say, it does not happen that often that while filming a movie a decision is made to jump for a new and much better manuscript. For this reason the flexibility RED has shown is highly interesting and consequently bit curious here.

I understand the situation and I am willing to wait for my Scarlet few months more!

Hi

It is always good to be kept updated. What I'm assuming is:

The more exotic monstro cameras will be more hit by delay?

Some of the mysterium-x development will less affected?

If this is the case then this will work for allot of people...

Still looking froward to trading in my Reds

Michael

great leaders tell people what they need to hear not what to hear.

It is the mentality of Red that has brought it this far. I'm willing to bet when economics change for the better and the rest of the world resorts back to incremental sales of available technology and monopolizing tactics creating technical incompatibility Red will stay its course and that mentality will prevail.

Thanks for the reality check Jim.

P.S. in the meantime if its good enough for Benicio and Steven its good enough for me!!

Its good for you guys that had the cash for it! In other words, for the lucky (and loaded) folks and companies that had the 25k needed for a working still 35mm glass enabled Red One...

EDIT- I can see why Red One users are not very concerned with this, and I don't blame you guys. Just understand that not everyone can be were you guys are right now...

Well... I completely understand Jim hitting the breaks.

Our thought on the downturn was to not go for the Red One and wait for the Scarlet S35 as we need to watch our pennies. A couple month delay we can handle. Much more than that and we'll need to seek another solution.

Thanks for the update.

Feel certain everybody understands your point. The difficulty at the first place is, how to get started, and indeed, some luck is needed there. Once things start to roll, then funding the equipment becomes less difficult. All what one can say here is, to become lucky one needs to diligent. Typically the wall is broken in an unexpected way and once one has proven the skill and capacity, then new opportunities will pop up and then at some point along this road equipments will follow. But indeed, breaking the wall at the first place is very difficult.

Well... I completely understand Jim hitting the breaks.

I don't think Jim hit the breaks.
He just slowed to down to only slightly above the speed limit.

I think Jim has a very talented and special Team - and I now I am even more excited about what they have in the works - now that I know the Team will get just a little more sleep.

Thanks for the post Jim - I'm sure this decision will make all the new products that much better. Bravo.

Misterium-X update "offer" on RED1 could be way to go during this recession time.

Later when the sensor, workflow and also economy improve could be right time

to 'jump" for new products.

Also finally to certify IMS for RED1 that could right now even accelerate

R1 sales in a low end market (indie one man/woman shooters with still lenses)

and easy get Panavised (IMS Panavision mount) for a high end market users.

So when its coming out in market???

I trust Jim and the way he drives his company. Last thing I need, and everyone else I trust, is Red take a plunge, close the company and leave Red1 owners with an orphan piece of gear and no service, no sales rep, no parts, etc, to keep it working and alive...

Who needs another DeLorean??? :)

I would probably do the same but in business no matter the market conditions the early bird gets the worm! If Canon produces a DSLR with manual control and a few choices of frame rates then Scarlet will suffer if it is to slow to market. There is opportunity in a down time and it makes me work all the harder. I am fully aware of the suffering going on as I work in the medical field. I run a small media business on the side and have been very busy because I refuse to slow down just because everyone else is. I like to buck trends. Of course I am not running a company like Red so I hope your products take off and you do well this year. Thanks for the update

Well you must mean the above the liners...cause I'd like to consider myself a 'cinema' person, and my half empty fridge, miniscule bank account and shitty beater of a car are VERY aware of the financial turmoil thats been abound.....

digitaliris... I hear you.

Thank you Jim,

I´m very happy to see how you care about your business. To me, it means you care about your team and their future too!
I´m sure they are happy to get back working only at 100% and get some more sleep and week-ends with family.
To everybody who waits for Scarlet: Don´t get me wrong, but a lot of people were waiting for 3 or more years to get R1, what does it mean to wait for Scarlet one or two month longer?

Be happy Red isn´t a Stock market company!

Marc
