I'm not saying tone-mapping is bad. I'm saying Bad Tonemapping is bad.![]()
OK, glad we cleared that up. And, yes.
Amen!
However... I've always wondered about tone-mapping videos extremely for stylistic reasons like in hallucination and fantasy sequences.
Pietro, yes, that's what I'm most excited about! Well, not really, I am most exited about capturing it all, easier, and thicker digital negatives. But this is a very exciting creative use of HDR. I've been begging for this! Also imagine Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas using it.
Has no one seen THESE videos?? They're doing proper HDR with two Red One's in the exact same manner as this video everyone is talking about. THIS is was HDR motion is supposed to look like...

They look thick! We would all grade differently. Personally I would have kept the white walls a bit lower in the first. I would have also kept both less saturated --but that was probably for illustration-- showing how thick the negative must be. I am pretty sure that the thicker the negative, the harder you can push saturation without it breaking.
Now imagine doing the same with two M-X!
It would love to play with an un-graded TIFF from their Omni-Ruby HDR test!! We should ask them to upload a frame. Heck, upload a clip, I'll host! But I would be more than happy with a TIFF.
