  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does 'complete kit' mean?

the xlrs may be under there with the bnc connector...? i cant wait to see what kind of Depth of Field this fixed lense has... i want a 2/3" red but we will have to see what lenses become available to best fit..

I don't think RED would sell us a "Complete Kit" that didn't have sound recording capabilities. I suspect that one of the 3 connectors on the lower back of the brain (maybe the middle one?) will take a break-out cable for XLR stereo in.

I sure hope that it comes with XLR built in. At least 1 because the original scarlet did promise audio recording capabilities. Well, atleast, that's what I recall and I sure hope i do recall correctly

If memory serves, dual-channel recording was promised.

Considering that with the Red ONE system they have to charge $2950 EVF, $2500 LCD, $450 battery ,$550 battery charger, $175 battery mount, $500 lens mount, $500 CF module, etc etc etc, I'm very nervous that a $750 "complete kit" would have to be made out of cardboard!

Better then nothing.

Got me there.

I'd love to look at the Red viewfinder that costs the same amount as a Canon XH A1 and snark that Red operates at margins that would even make Apple's iPod division jealous.

But Jim, more and more with each announcement, crushes my beloved cynicism and convinces me that every bit of it is going into Red's obscenely-massive-for-a-company-its-size R&D budget.

I can't imagine he's in the black on this whole Red venture yet. I think it's gonna take the higher-volume Scarlets to make that happen.

yeah but red doesn't need to pay for much marketing or keeping legacy systems going so they are probably accepting much lower margins and hoping for high volumes

I am looking at getting the 2/3 fixed plus the FF35 Scarlet I really hope the 2/3 fixed Kit has the following

At Least a 3.5/ 4 inch LCD (good enough to be able to focus in 3K)
I believe that 3- and 4.8-inch LCDs are the options. I vote for the 4.8-inch one, as that was the size on the original Scarlet design.

AF
ND's
On board Camera Controls
Balanced XLR Audio two channels with some sort of assignable camera control
A/V inputs/outputs eg SDI/HDMI output
MEDIA Module with room for two cards.
Some form of peaking for display.

I would be really happy with the above.

If I could get the above with battery and charge, shoulder mount, rails, remote, and some type of hard case for 4,500 MAX I'd order today.

Just a thought:
I really think the 2/3 Fixed lenses option coming in a hard case with room for some accessories such as batterys, and a little extra storage space would be a great idea. It would be like purchasing from a retail store !!! you get a complete camera kit and all in one box.
Just My 2 cents.

Agreed.

I don't know if this was seen before or mentioned, but if it was, I haven't heard about it. I also am reviving this thread because I don't think this warrants a whole new thread.

I was looking at the renders on the site a second ago, and I saw the words "Compact Flash" written on the side of the brain. Upon closer inspection, there seemed to be the kind of little dent you put in to allow your fingernail to pop open something. I assume, in this case, a place to put a CF card.

Nice to think a whole separate module won't be needed to hold the CF.

I would hope the, Pro Cinema I/O Module, @ least one Recording Module, Battery Module, Wireless Redmote or Accessory Handle, @ least one Crystal Clear Monitoring. The only thing missing would be a REDmic. For the $750 Complete Kit to make it work right out of the Redbox.

I have confidence in Janard and RED. Scarlet fly-by-wire will have all needed to shoot out of the box! It will choot on CF as well.

I am wondering if it will be usable in extreme weather conditioins....
Any other specificatoins? weigt, fps, mount for canon lences?

thank you

David

I doubt you'll get the pro cinema module and battery module as part of the $750 deal. I think I recall Jim saying that the 'shooting package' or whatever it's called doesn't include any of the standard modules from the brochure, but other add-ons that will make it functional for less. I think that's what your $750 will buy you.

Although I am curious as to if the wireless remote will be included, we haven't seen a render without one, and I vaguely remember hearing something about how it was part of the brain.

However, it could all change, or maybe it already has. I just wouldn't count on getting too many extras for only $750.

People keep referring to the Scarlet as the "Fixed lens" Scarlet. I'm sort of a red newbie, but is there a fixed lens Scarlet and a Scarlet with interchangeable lenses? And, if so, which would be preferrable -- a Scarlet with fixed lens and Letus adapter, or a Scarlet that utilizes digital interchangeable lenses?

Thanks!

Yes, there's a fixed lens 2/3" camera in the pipeline. Whether that is better for your needs/budget than one that uses interchangeable lenses only you can decide.

Hm. I guess my more exacting question would be then, do the people here prefer interchangeable digital lenses, or do they prefer to use film camera lenses?

All the models are at RED.COM in the scarlet/epic section. Both fixed lens and interchangeable lens models available in 2/3".

As for the question of the Letus or other 35mm adapter, it's one of those dead horse topics that have been beat to death. IMO, if you intend to mostly shoot with 35mm optics, then why bother with an adapter like the letus on a 2/3" camera? Why not buy the S35mm Scarlet and attach the lenses directly to the camera? You gain a more user-friendly package that way, superior resolution, no unnecessary light loss, etc.. S35 Scarlet brain is $7K. Fixed lens Scarlet is $3K. A proper adapter that can actually do the 3K sensor any justice will be $3500+, so that S35mm Scarlet looks really appealing. I'm thinking that will be the model that is most popular with the current indie production / 35mm adapter crowd.

Obviously, there will be many who do put a 35mm adapter onto the 2/3" scarlet, I'm even expecting one or more adapter companies to make a 35mm adapter to fit the 2/3" RED mount directly on that camera. So in the end, it will come down to buying the solution that will fit your needs best.

Yeah, and probably the price (rental or otherwise) of the lenses. I'm assuming the Scarlet will use the same lenses as the Red, so I'm sure an availability of lenses won't be a problem (unlike the EX3).
