  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello,

Just wanted to know your thoughts, or even your experiences with some kind of adapter like this: http://sonnettech.com/product/tempossdpro.html

I have seen it for PC, but I am Mac based and maybe already has had the experience of using it.

Cheers!

I don't get it. My motherboards support those kinds of RAID speeds through standard SATA 6g. I have a 600MBs 10k rpm RAID and an SSD at 500MBs running simultaneously and haven't seen any transfer bottlenecks. Not to mention you then lose another PCIe slot which I find far more valuable than my internal SATA ports.

It's convenient in a Thunderbolt chassis. I have one in my Magma 3T. Means I have a Rocket, an eSATA HBA and a fast SSD scratch disk in a single Thunderbolt connected box.

It's application is for when you have a PCIe slot and no drive spaces. These make more sense for server and compute blades. Unfortunately, it's a poor-man's solution to PCIe SSD as you're limited to dual 6Gbps 2.5" devices. Nowhere near the speeds attainable by PCIe SSDs that are out there, although at a much higher cost.

PCIe slots are usually precious, often more so in the Mac where we only have 4 of them. If you're going to take up a slot for storage (not a bad idea at all), make it good and put in something big and fast that will sit in an external box.

We have a few of these and loaded them with Crucial 960GB SSDs in RAID 0.

Speeds up and over 650MB using Sonnet Echo Express and Magma ExpressBox 3T.

Edit: I was able to get 850 plus with SanDisk Extremes, recent Crucial 960GB is slower.
