  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Please share what you guys suggest I do for Playback with Sound on set, as a DIT/VA in training.

Is it as simple as plugging some headphones into the camera somewheres?

I don't know much (read: one single thing) about sound on the camera, just that I've got XLR adapters for the sound guy.

Please lead me to the light...I'm searching the previous posts now.

Thanks folks!

haha, thanks Joel. That's quite the succinct reply. I appreciate that as a start.

I wonder what solutions the great RED ONE community have found for playback where we have more than one person wishing to listen with a set of headphones.

Can you, or anyone else, enlighten me? Perhaps with a little less Zen/brevity?

Do you use the headphone jack with an adapter to play on some speakers next to your monitors?

Do you use the XLR audio ouput to some other kind of speaker set-up? What is it?

Do you use the HDMI output to a HDtv or Monitor that has speakers?

Thank you for your help.

My ideal playback system would be some kind of digital recorder with timecode to protools (in which the audio on set would be recorded into). Then the recorder plays out, with sync to protools, and running the audio out from protools into a couple of headphone amps. You could run protools in combination with Digidesign Live Venue.

Now of course all that is in the 55-100k range.

Something cheaper, just run one of the 720p video taps to some kind of deck, while recording audio to it along with recording the audio however else you plan on. Playback at that point is tape-based. Use the timecode cable to loop through the deck for audio sync, at the same time of running the timecode to your audio recorder.

Pretty much the suggestion is to always record with some kind of external recorder, and running audio cable into the camera only for offline editing (cause it's almost impossible to edit with silent video, and time consuming for things to be synced up in post before starting the offline). And using you're external source as the final audio source.

Just two ideas that I have.

HD-SDI cable also carries sound, if you have a monitor that has build in speakers or headphone output , you can get away with one cable running from the camera. But you need to plug sound cable to the camera first.

I know that HD-SDI cables normally carry sound, but is that the case with the Red One?

That does limit you to either the monitor speakers or only one set of headphones (unless you use a splitter cable). Most headphone amps take XLRs.

Audio Outputs

Audio Outputs

You have got four types of audio output always available to you on playback.

HD-SDI with embedded audio - 4 channels

HDMI with embedded audio - 4 channels

XLR (line level) & headphone - 2 channels each, both driven from the same mix down selector.

um, battery powered ipod speakers into the red headphone jack if you're just looking for quick and dirty.

As a DIT I would imagine a lot of playback would be off the media you have downloaded. Probably more so than playback direct from the camera. At least that has been my experience, the director and script want to check previous scenes for continuity etc. So you might need to have a scenario for cart playback as well.

An afterthought: If there is a location soundman and he is running audio to the camera, he is probably also running the headphones back to his cart. When you playback from the camera it can be routed through his Comteks and you don't have to worry about it. Also if the DIT starts bringing a lot of audio gear it starts to step on the audio guy's toes.

We just run an HDMI cable out of our RED and into our cheapie Samsung monitor. Works as great as a cheapie monitor could.
