Hey guys,

I’m thinking about departing with my RED One MX. I just haven’t been able to get much use out of it because of the size and weight, a lot of my rigging is geared towards lighter setups as I came up from the DLSR world. It’s only been of used a number of times for a static music video and a number of interviews.

Since buying the camera back in 2012, the camera landscape has obviously changed in a very dramatic way. What current system, that wouldn’t break the bank, would be close to the performance from the RED ONE (but not as heavy)?

The obvious suggestion is the Raven, or perhaps Scarlet-W. There should also be some deals on used Scarlets/Epics as the DSMC2 cameras proliferate. An Epic/Scarlet with a lightweight lens, battery in the side handle and 5" LCD can stay under 8 lbs. If that's still too much weight, you could try the Sony A7 series cams but beware of rolling shutter/jello in some scenes.

Cheers - #19

I'm planning on shooting a couple of shorts on my BT Red One this year (with my soon to be ordered Sony Primes) then moving on to a Scarlet-W. The One will then be semi-retired to B-roll duties, assuming I'm too sentimental to sell it.

If you're looking for something around the price of a BT R1, then Blackmagic are in that range, but their history of delays and production problems seems to persist. Sony and Canon have better offerings at higher price points, but i honestly find them not quite up to the R1. Excluding Red's own cameras, I honestly think only Arri and Sony (F65) have cameras in the same ballpark.

Like Blair and Nick said above, Raven is your best bet on a lower budget. If you can stretch to S-W, it's amazing value - 80% of Epic Dragon for 50% of the price, but a working setup is going to come to nearer 20K GBP inc. VAT.

I would love to keep it in the RED family, but I'm not too sure my budget can extend to a RED Raven at this point in time, although it will likely be an entry point back into the companies lineup in the future. What Black Magic is of adequate performance, Ian?

If you don't use it a lot, I would sell now and then wait until NAB. A big price cut is imminent, NAB seems to be the ideal time for it. If that happens you could pick up a Scarlet MX for the price of your RED One as it is now.

What is the budget for the R1 now, $4,000? Scarlet MX will fall there if price cuts happen.

I know someone that may part with his epic-x for a red one but I don't know if he will do even trade or ask for an extra 2K, I really don't know. It may depend on your kit but his setup is ready to shoot with great low hours. What are you looking to sell for and what's in your kit PM me.

I'm not even sure what the going rate is. Going from auction sites and the forum here. I think it falls between $3,000-$4,000 for the body alone. I would love for someone to clarify this?

Aaron, my kit is very basic.

I think the One has over 1,000 hours, and I would sell it with:

PL Mount & Nikon Mount
SSD Module
5.6-inch monitor
640gb Red Drive
Power Adapter
Two 15mm top mounts
& a 3rd party V-mount battery plate.

Why does he want to part with his Epic-X for a Red One?

If your budget is lower than the Raven, then you might take a look at a used Sony FS700R with an external recorder for 4K RAW. Other than that, there really isn't a 4K digital cinema camera beneath the Raven except for the Blackmagic Ursa and, if you could find a good deal, an AJA Cion. NAB 2016 should hopefully offer some $6,000 and below 4K/4K+ digital cinema cameras. The RED One MX has been a camera I've had my eye on for a while now but the URSA 4.6K looks really interesting and, as has been mentioned, there's always the chance for there to be some BT sale from RED on Scarlets or Epics. On the DSLR end, based on my experiences with the Sony A7S and Atomos Shogun 4K, the Sony A7S II would be the most interesting option unless something special comes out at NAB. Nothing really can replace the RED One MX but new options are there now that weren't there before that can make for great filming experiences, it just depends on your needs.

Well if it's just about 4K then the DVX200 and the Canon XC10 are both 4K and cheap.
However I always think of Red being about the raw in which case the blackmagic pocket still holds it's own as the best camera blackmagic released. Small as a DSLR and very versatile and economical but it's 1080p only.

There is the new Blackmagic Ursa mini 4.6K on the way which might be worth a look.

Sony FS7 is nice but maybe outside of your budget.

It's not clear what you hope to achieve so it's hard to point at anything specific.

4k is just a resolution number RED is in a league without many competitors. ARRI, High End Sony CineAlta's. I'll be selling my BT RED ONE Soon myself in favor of a Raven but I still think The camera is competitive today if you can work with the size and weight. Just my personal opinion after trying several other 4K cameras.

People always talk about how they smell a scam...man shut up with that. they said the same thing about me to a lot of people until I made that purchase of a RED One on reduser. People always scream scam are haters. The Red one is in a class of it's own, I was going to trade my epic-x for a red one because it was my dream camera and some people don"t have the money to buy another camera. when he drop his price to a low level I said why trade when i can afford it now. So now I have two MX cameras.

People warning of scams are trying to have the community's back, definitely not just haters. Having seen what's stolen, I thank God for this place and people looking out.

yeah but most of the time its the seller. I contact them and do research and only go thru people that will stop transactions if the product isn't what they say it is or a scam like missing parts.

Thanks for the info Zack! I stopped getting email notifications so I thought the thread was dead.

I would say the URSA mini or maybe the AJA.
